What do you guys think of Elance? I'm thinking about hiring someone in to do some simple coding/tweaking on my webpage. Many are from all parts of the world, but prices are most reasonable, in most cases. I know, depending on their skill level. Anyone have any experience with this type of outsource?

  • I have had experience - way back in the day when I didn't know what I was doing.

I do outsource, still, but not SEO or content at all. Just stuff I have no experience in or skill in.

There are other sites out there (like odesk) that are also good - one thing you need to make sure of when hiring someone, though, is make SURE your interview process is rigorous - and your instructions are CLEAR.

One trick I have done to make sure the people that apply have actually READ my job posting is to put in a benign sentence in the MIDDLE of my job posting - like "When you contact me, I want you to name your favorite breed of dog"

That way, if they don't do it- you know to automatically reject them, because they don't know how to read job postings - and they're probably just replying to all of them that are being posted.

You may be better off using the for hire section on here. This way you can inspect the potential persons previous posts etc to see their reputation.

I guess a quick response to an add by a potential contract might suggest inexperience. I never thought of placing that special question. Good idea Odesk, huh? I'll take a look. I actually got word from Shopify that they would be able to help me some, which will make my job a little easier. Everyday I'm learning more and more. A headache and stimulating at the same time: a stimulating headache?

Yes, Elance is a good place to get work done. If you have never hired a freelancer before, I would recommend:

    1. Write a detailed project summary. Include everything that you need done. Make sure that you don't include any ambiguous phrases.
    2. Choose your freelancer carefully. Their overall rating is meaningless. Look for a large number of projects completed similar to what you are hiring them for, and someone that asks good questions regarding your project.
    3. Make sure that they have everything they need before they start.
    4. Communicate often.
    5. If you are making changes to the project, make sure that the freelancer understand and agrees to the changes.
    6. Test, test, test before you accept the work.
