What type of store would work better

Just wondering what you all think as I'm trying to find new products for my online store. Right now it's all handmade jewelry. I'm thinking either a department store approach with a lot of different products that target a lot of different types of people, or a specialized store, maybe the jewelry and women's clothes, or handmade and fine jewelry. What type might get more customers and sales?

My view on any business is that you should select a niche that there is a demand for but more importantly one that you have a passion for. This second point is often forgotten but very important.

To answer your question I would choose a niche where product lines are not updated frequently. For example a PC video card is updated every couple of months, which means a lot of work to keep you site current. Better to choose a niche where models are not updated frequently, like Boat Anchors.

    Hi,

Personally I feel that sticking to the jewelry theme would work best in the long run. From my experience, you're much better off picking a reasonably narrow niche (jewelry isn't that narrow, but it's not too bad ), then expanding as much as you can within that niche so you totally dominate the market.

For example, people that buy one type of jewelry, will probably be quite interested in buying other types of jewelry as well...& may not be interested in buying women's clothing (or at least not necessarily the styles you stock).

Also, if you're building an email list on your current site, then that means you have a list of potential jewelry buyers. Whenever you add new jewelry products to the site, you can send out an email & end up with more sales than you would if you were sending out an email about clothes.

Also, the more narrow your niche, the cheaper it is for advertising.

So I'd go for something like the handmade & fine jewelry...stick to the jewelry niche, but expand within it.

    Cheers

    Rachel

I suggest that you focus on accessories. You could try bags and belts. No clothes to my opinion. There are too many clothes stores out there.

Actually I was thinking of doing acessories too. Maybe I'll forget the clothes idea. because that seems like something that would be some work to keep updated as seasons change. I also have a lot of experience selling jewelry in a regular store and I like it, so I think I'll stick with that and work on finding unique pieces.
