I'm wondering if I should use wordpress to create a store that sells rustic cabin decor. I'll probably have between 50-100 items. I'm would like the website to look much like blackforestdecor.com

Will wordpress handle this ok? Can someone point me in the right direction to find a good theme. I don't mind paying for a great one.
Thanks,
Forrest

You can find a great theme at Themeforest.net, search under ecommerce. I do recommend Wordpress and Woocommerce. Let me know if you need some design help.

Ok thanks. Would using GoDaddy and their premium website builder for Ecommerece be a good decision? Or should I use WooCommerece with wordpress? I"ve also heard good things about Shopify and BigCommerece will both of those work with wordpress?

Yes the wordpress platform can easily handle this type of site for you. There are thousands if not hundreds of thousands of plugins also that can help achieve exactly what you are looking for on a reasonable budget.

    Good luck

Ugh, I wouldn't use GoDaddy's solution. It is extremely limiting and isn't really meant to be used for full-blown ecommerce stores.

TBH, I wouldn't use WooCommerce either, unless you are okay with not taking credit cards on site. WooCommerce is NOT PCI compliant, therefore you cannot take on-site CC payments unless you wanna risk being audited and heavily fined! Don't get me wrong, it's a great solution aside from that short coming.

If you want to build a full blown ecommerce store and accept credit cards on site to maximize your conversion rate and profit, I recommend looking at a fully hosted PCI compliant solution like BigCommerce, AmeriCommerce or CoreCommerce.

    I hope this helps!

That helps a lot thanks. So if I understand this right, if I use BigCommerce then I don't need Wordpress or a hosting site like GatorHost?

Try to avoid GoDaddy for hosting. Their MySQL database servers are very slow. Ecommerce plugins/solutions heavily uses database.

First, try to avoid shared hosting solutions. It is better to go with VPS servers. There are many good offers so choose whatever suits your needs. If you can afford SSD VPS that will greatly increase database performance.

As OnlineStoreHelp already indicated above, GoDaddy hosting is absolutely awful for ecommerce stores and Wordpress sites. On top of that, Wordpress is NOT the best ecommerce solution and shouldn't even be a consideration if you are serious about building a strong ecommerce store. WooCommerce and all other WP ecommerce plugins that I've seen are NOT PCI compliant if you want to be able to accept on-site credit card payments. You will be stuck accepting nothing but off-site solutions like PayPal, and that is going to be extremely detrimental to your conversion rate!

If the $30/month to accept credit cards on site and the $25/month for a fully PCI compliant shopping cart platform (like BigCommerce) is too much of an investment to make, you probably shouldn't even bother spending any time on launching a store. Over 99% of people that go the cheap hosting + PayPal + WP plugins route for their ecommerce store have closed shop within 6 months. If you aren't going to take the advice of people that are successful in this market you may as well just quit before you begin and save yourself a ton of heartache and wasted time!

Sorry to be so blunt and to the point, but I am truly trying to help you here. If you are seriously trying to use GoDaddy hosting for an ecommerce store, you're clearly not equipped to make this decision and move at this point.

I'm sorry but I have reached my maximum point of tolerance for the unmitigated horseshit of "WooCommerce is not PCI Complaint" bs. They are a major international supplier of shopping cart systems, I use them and I have never heard of them being sued for non-compliance. People that are telling you that only hosted carts like BigCommerce or Shopify could ever be legal are peddling anal retentive nonsense that may have been true 5 years ago but certainly no longer is. Magento and even PayPal's "Buy it now" button are perfectly legal and only the extreme legal interpretation by folks who seem to want to preclude new entries to ecommerce ventures from starting up is heard in these forums. Perhaps some day France, which is hyper-regulation happy, will make them illegal but that is not now the case.
Stop and think, if Magento, OpenCart, Prestashop, OSCommerce and Woo were illegal why are 10's of thousands of websites running them?
If you are thinking of starting a new venture don't seek to ask permission from "experts", just do it.
      You can always apologize later.

Actually, PCI compliance is a big deal and most of the hosted shopping cart solutions are PCI DSS Level 1 compliant. The other shopping cart solutions such as Magento, OpenCart, OSCommerce, Zen Cart are PCI certified, Woocommerce is neither and given the recent security woes wordpress has had needs to be pointed out. And no, its not the shopping carts that get in trouble for a privacy breach, it is you as the owner that does. It is you as the owner that can have your merchant account shut down. And the beauty of PayPal Web Payments Standard is it it PCI DSS Level 1 compliant because you are checking out on their (PayPal's) website. Same thing with Amazon's check out system.

As for being concerned about it, if you have a privacy breach, there are consequences. Especially for our European colleagues who have a privacy breach that by law are required to report report any breaches to the European regulator who determines if you have to contact and let every one of your customers know you had a breach.

If you want to learn a little about cyber and privacy breaches, a colleague of mine did a webinar on March 25 talking about the consequences. It is designed for larger companies but you can learn a little bit about the consequences (recording started late so some of it is missed).

Wow, lots of conflicting views regarding wordpress eCommerce and PCI compliance.

I have to apologize guys, I didn't mean to disregard anyone's advice or come off as a jerk. The only reason I wanted to stay with GoDaddy is because the store owner already signed up for a "merchant account hosting package" and I didn't want to have her cancel it. (I already had to talk her out of a weebly account and not using GoDaddy's website builder to make the store)

I won't use GoDaddy hosting. But I would like to dig a little deeper into wordpress and PCI compliance.
    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Just for your own information, Woothemes (maker of woocommerce) admits they are not PCI Certified. "Ultimately, PCI and all of the above points are the responsibility of the store owner, however, we can offer advice on compliance. It should be noted that WooCommerce is not PCI-DSS certified - however, this does not prevent your site from becoming PCI compliant. WooCommerce is written with security in mind with audits from WP core contributors and Sucuri."

@rsykes - as OnlineStoreHelp has pointed out you are not very well informed on the subject of PCI compliance. The solutions (like woo) are NOT the issue and of course they aren't "illegal" to use. The store owner / business owner is the one at fault if they are collecting sensitive info on their site and their site is not compliant.

@maxamillion125 - A PCI compliant, hosted solution is certainly the way to go, ESPECIALLY for a first time store owner. Creating a website is a lot of work and the last thing you need to be worrying about is whether your store is secure or not!

I'm not sure about Shopify, but BigCommerce has well over 100 free themes that are built in. You should be able to find something that you like just as much as that one. You can start a 15-day free trial without even providing a credit card if you want to check it out.

BTW, I'm never a fan of light text on a dark background. It gives users a headache and makes them unwilling to read through large chunks of text.

Shopify's template selection is very limited. I found little that would suit my needs there. I went through BigCommerce three times before finding something that would work for me. Still, I may not use BigCommerce. I haven't been at all impressed with their customer service.

All I wanted was a left column navigation, short header, clean layout and no right column. Pretty simple, eh? Nope. If you want modifications made you have to pay a developer to do it unless you're proficient with html and css. I know a bit of html, but I don't speak css at all.

I read a review blog earlier today at How to Pick the Best Ecommerce Platform - Advice from Andrew Bleakley - Ecommerce Platforms that flat out shredded nearly every ecommerce solution out there, especially Wordpress.

Hopefully that will help some others besides myself make a decision.

In my experience BigCommerce's customer service is as good as anyone's in the industry. Their live support & toll-free service have been very helpful every time we've had to reach out to them. I avoid submitting tickets because I'm far too impatient!

Regarding themes or templates, BigCommerce is constantly adding new ones. In fact, they've added about 10 in the past couple of months here. Also, customizing the templates is relatively easy. I'm nothing more than a CSS hack and I've been able to do some pretty major tweaks on my own.

Yep, the bird cages website template is pretty much what I was looking for. BC didn't have many with left column navigation and Shopify had even less.

Actually, I had a horrible experience trying to reach both Shopify and BigCommerce. I never could get through to my assigned sales rep at BC. I was asked to leave my number and he'd get back to me. Nope. Why can't I talk to someone else?

I was able to get through to their tech support with no trouble at all, but not the sales department.

I was on hold for 20 minutes with Shopify and then they disconnected me when they told me to hold while they transferred me. I called back, held for 20 more minutes and said "forget this!"

After looking at one of your other posts I decided to check out CoreCommerce and was pleasantly surprised at what I found. They have several templates that will work for me, mobile integration, which I need, and more. I also checked their customer service right away to see how fast and helpful they were and they were great.

I'm taking the 15 day trial now, but from what I've seen so far, I'm sold. The only drawback I see, which isn't a big deal, is the lack of unlimited bandwidth. Their #2 and #3 smallest plans only offer 2 and 4 gigs and they charge you $9.00 each if you go over bandwidth or disc space. I'd have to think that I'd be making a lot more than $9.00 if that were to happen. Know what I mean? If it does happen it'll be a one time thing and I'll know that I need to upgrade. That's a good problem to have. :-)

I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Unfortunately you will have a hard time using ready made themes unless they are made for your specific cart. What I have discovered with most of the hosted carts they have what I like to call generic themes that can be customized with work. Shopify being the easiest and by the time you add your products, logos and others, even similar themes can look their own. All of them allow you to dig into the CSS if you are so inclined.

As much as we like to brand ourselves the key thing is an easy to navigate, quick loading and simple to check out. The great thing the hosted carts has done is really made it easy to check out. Many abandoned carts simply are the result of poor user experience. One developer I was just talking to was very impressed with what the hosted solutions are doing in the checkout and buying experience.

      Hope this information helps.

    James,

Wordpress is a really great starting point, and should get you where you need to go. If you find yourself fighting to get the look and feel that you want, I've had excellent results hiring someone who knows .css to tweak it to my liking. Once you find a wordpress theme with the features you are looking for, you can tweak the look to look pretty much exactly how you want it by hiring a VA to edit the .css, and possibly hiring a graphic designer to supply the graphics which will the .css coder will put in your site.

Sound expensive? It's not - I'm just getting my website redone as we speak, and already it looks much improved with only about 5 hours billed so far at $6.66 /hr. Getting graphics done might cost you $50 - $250 depending on what you want done, and a VA might spend say 5 - 10 hours doing the tweaking in .css so all told, you might be out $100 - $300 to get a custom look and feel.

Also, personally it's really great to have a VA for the wordpress administration who can make changes to my site for me if I get stuck, or track down/fix a misbehaving plugin etc. I spent an hour trying to get a sidebar to center correctly with some graphics before I gave up and handed to my VA who fixed it for me in about 10 minutes and then showed me what I was doing wrong.

Anyway, if you're interested in this sort of thing, hit me up and I can give you the contact info for the VA working on my site, or I can tell you how you can find your own VA to do graphics / .css / or just help you set your wordpress site up if you've never done that before.

    Good luck!

    Jonathan

This is a totally viable option.

Personally, I use WooCommerce, an SSL from GoDaddy and a hosting account from MediaTemple.net.

I prefer Stripe as a credit card processor because it integrates seamlessly and has lower rates than most other processors.

As long as you have a good SSL, you don't need to worry too much about security. Still, you'll need a blacklist, something like WP Vault, and the like.

    Other than that, you're golden.
