hi warriors,
I am planning to build a website like rentback.com .It is much more than just an e commerce website. I though it might be easier and cheaper to go with a volusion or shopify, and hire a freelancer to create a customized themw for it, rather than creating a wordpress/PHP website from scratch. But I want to know which platform is easier to customize? and which one is more popular with freelancers? Volusion is $15/month while shopify is $29/month, so far +1 for volusion.
Thanks

    Hi,

I personally like Volusion better in terms of customization and access to freelancers. I've demo'd them both, but consider Volusion to be the easier to use.

In terms of pricing, Volusion offers no transaction fees, whereas Shopify charges 1-2% until a certain plan. It seems like this is usually a big deciding factor.

Volusion offers a free 14 day trial so give it a try and see what you think. It's really simple to add products and customize your store and they have a help wizard to guide you through the whole process.

If you're looking for a freelancer to help out, check out Freelancer.com and elance.com. There are tons of Volusion designers available.

    Good luck!

I'm not sure that is gonna work for you. I am assuming people are gonna search for particular UPC's or ISBN's and then get a quote based on quality, etc. This is closer to an auction site then it is a ecommerce site. You may have no choice but to go for a custom site in this case, or take a clone script and have it customized to do what you want it to.

To answer your question directly, Shopify is easier to play around with, but Volusion probably offers more powerful customizability for more technical users (who you could hire).

That said, I'd heed OnlineStoreHelp's advice. I can't imagine a functional auction site on Shopify or Volusion either.

But bear in mind that for $15 price some features that can be important for you will not be available, such things like social media tools, extended stats, ratings, newsletter, etc.

I use both shopify and big commerce.
    I like bigcommerce better.
They are more responsive and easier to work with.
