What do you believe drove people to your site for the first time? SEO, adwords, a CSE... This question does not apply to eBay and Amazon listings.

For me, it was SEO. I first started selling unlocked smartphones which were called Pocket PCs at that time, in 2005. Not many people were familiar with them, and not as many online vendors actually sold them.

This was all pre-iPhone. So whenever I listed an unlocked smartphone, I'd usually eventually rank within the top 10 SERP for Google. Oh, how I miss those days.

For me (my personal ecommerce store), I actually got a preorder via friend-of-friend on Facebook even before launching my store.

I sent an invoice out with every order I dealt with though eBay. At the bottom of that I had a link to my website and a 10% discount code.

I also put an advert in a magazine with a circulation of 20,000 (highly targeted)

I must say paid traffic from Facebook. The investment was well worth it almost immediately, and I still do it as long as it covers the expenses.

  • My first sale came from screwing it all up royally bad from a PPC campaign that wasn't even close to optimized -- on a site that wasn't optimized, and everything was just 'new'.

My how things have changed since learning how to 'data' collect and make adjustments.

I got my first sale by submitting my product to an information site that did an article on it...it has been a major source of traffic for my site and also served as a great learning experience for SEO purposes...even though it was a nofollow link I still received a lot of traffic and have learned that ONE SINGLE LINK can be 100% life changing for you and your business. Now I focus my time on building deep links into my ecommerce pages and even if I only get one good link a week I know it will be well worth it.

I was shocked and amazed how fast I made first sale After 2 years I started Google Adwords, it helped me to stay on the top of page for years. I give names to all my products, categories and pages with SEO in mind.
