How can I modify shipping costs in Shopify

Hi there, I am using Shopify but I am having problems with postage. At the moment I am doing it by weight as some of my items are light and some heavy. The trouble is that if somebody buys 3 items, they get charged postage on each item so that when they get to the checkout and see the cost of postage, they abandon the sale.
Does anybody know how to change this?

What is the alternative postage you want to use?

I am not too sure. I know I would like it so that with multiple purchases they get one postage charge at the end, rather than postage on each.
Iam selling jewellery so they do not weigh much but I also sell coasters which weigh more.
I do know that I loose customers who buy several items when they get to the checkout.

Are they making multiple transactions? How is it that they are being given postage on individual vs. multiple buys at one time? One big purchase, for example? When I buy items on Amazon, for example, I will purchase 3-4 items, and a price is given at end, when I buy from one merchant (various merchants is another story). But it sound like you are one shop. Or maybe I don't quite understand the issue.

At Shopify you have the option of setting the shipping by weight or by prices and each item is charged as you buy them so that when you get to the checkout you have, say 3 items weighing a total of less than half a kilo yet they have 3 separate shipping charges. When they see the total cost, they abandon the purchase.

You need create bracketed shipping costs. For example:

    0-0.5 lbs - $5
    0.6 - 1 lb - $6
    1.1 - 200 lbs - $7

So if they bought 3 items weighing 0.5 lbs each, it would cost $7 and not $15.

Postage can cause many people to abandon a sale, what we have done with our websites is to charge flat shipping to everyone, and subsidize the cost of actual shipping from the cost of the product.

For instance we charge a flat $6 even though most shipping costs us $10-$12. This reduces shopping cart abandonment considerably, as the sticker shock factor mostly disappears. Obviously our profits fluctuate from customer to customer, but we are fine with that.

Apparently there are psychological thresholds people don't like to go over, each time something adds shipping, and goes from say $18->25 people get scared off, so it is actually better to go lets say from $20.99 - 25.99, because people don't see the shipping as being too much, normally this increases conversions even though they pay more.

      Something to keep in mind.

Thanks for that. If Shopify doesn't come up with an answer I may have to try that work around. although shipping from the UK to the rest of the world is a darned expensive item. (The Govt is trying to make the Royal Mail profitable so that they can sell it to a private company so they keep hiking the rates!)
