Handling Shipping for Multiple Dropshippers

I am almost finished developing my ecommerce site - onlinepetstore (dot) com

However I need to figure out how best to handle shipping when there are multiple dropshippers

Anyone have any suggestions?

For example if someone places 1 order for 3 products that comes from 3 dropshippers, I have to pay shipping for 3 products.

Also some products can be really expensive to dropship, and I don't always know in advance how much it can cost.

Ordero can help manage issues with multiple drop shippers and do best price comparisons for you on shipping. Unfortunately the 3x shipping cost is something you will have to build in to your pricing model, you will need to eat it since it's unlikely your customer will appreciate a 3x shipping fee.

You can be honest and write in description or somewhere next to product something like this:
"Please note due to overload of our 1st warehouse, this item located in our 2nd warehouse and will be shipped separately, additional charges apply."
Keep it as it is, if customer really want this item, they will pay, especially for children and pets. Just make sure that there will be no hassle from multiple dropshippers.

It just means it is possible on some orders you will lose money. Especially bulky and heavy items, you just have to try and push the higher margin items. I do this for some gourmet coffees and some orders I just break even since I have stuff that comes direct from the farmer.

It is not uncommon for customers to get orders in multiple boxes so I do not agree with the comment above, they just care that they get their product in a timely manner.

I have that same problem - I try to offer suggestions on each product so they will stick with the same brand. It's not easy and I wonder are we better having multiple websites for each brand instead? Thoughts anyone?

Here is a solution we use.

Lets say you have 4 customers who order 3 products (1 each from vendor A, B and C). If you drop ship all the items it would require 12 (4x3) individual shipments- VERY expensive especially if the are going UPS or FedEX to residential addresses.

What we do instead is have suppliers A, B and C ship to our location. Then we consolidate the products and ship the combined order to the customers. This reduces 12 shipments to 7. Almost a 50% savings in shipping.

If your volume is sufficient just place orders with each vendor every few days. An advantage is the customer will get 1 package from your company which creates a better image for your brand. Enclose marketing material/ coupons/ catalogs in the packages to increase repeat business.

I doubt the original poster is even following this thread anymore, however, for the sake of anyone else that stumbles across it... It will be hard in the beginning because you won't have a lot of data to base your logistics upon. But eventually you can work the shipping costs in to your pricing model, as well as offset some costs with other high-margin items. Your bulk items may end up as your loss leaders, but your prime items might make up the difference by a decent amount.

Further, once you are able to see what your prime items are, you may consider beginning to order some of those items early and in bulk to store at your location. This will potentially get you a better cost on the items, ensure that you have items available when your supplier experiences a supply hiccup and forgets to mention it to you, as well as allowing you some latitude on your shipping options.

        EDIT:
Of course, I type that first line and as soon as I post this, the little green indicator is lit up on his profile showing that he's online! Open mouth, insert foot!
