Paypal Website Integration

Hi,

1. Can I host digital products on Paypal itself, or is a 3rd party marketplace provider required, like Paydotcom, Payloadz, or JVZoo?

2. Paypal says that I cannot have a free trial through their subscription offering, there is a minimum charge required when the person goes to download the digital product, I have seen free trials before, how could I accomplish offering my customers a free trial? What payment provider allows you to have a truly free trial, and then charge the customer on the 8th day?

This is what I found on Paypal's digital good FAQs:

Can I sell subscriptions with the Digital Goods solution? Yes, subscriptions are supported with caveat that the subscription must be set up with a purchase amount greater than zero. There is no trial subscription support.

Thank you very much

You can host them yourself either on your own hosting or through something like Amazon S3. Most times when it comes to a free trial, they are doing it through a membership type system like Digital Access Pass that allows you to set it all up.

Thank you for your response. I am selling a product. There would be no membership aspect to the purchase of the product. It would be like Microsoft (I should be so lucky) selling MS Word on a website, as a digital download, rather than as a physical product. They usually offer a 30 day trial, in my case it would be a 7 day trial.

With that said, do you still feel the same about your membership statement. I just don't see how membership relates to selling a digital product as a vendor.

In my experience what many people do using PayPal is offer a nearly free trial - i.e. $1 for say 14 days and then the balance of the payment to be collected automatically if the subscription (which will only consist of one payment - two including the initial $1) will be collected.

But you could probably make the minimum payment $0.01 - but even $1 is as good as free to most people, and just that small amount will weed out the tire kickers!

It is hard to say. Does the digital download stop working after 30 days? Does it call back to the service? Or is it, you hope someone pays up after the trial. MS Word stops working after 30 days.

If that is what you want to do, your license page (at experation) should just point towards a checkout system and you can use just about any payment system to that. The hard part is giving them a unique license key. I don't have experience in that to tell you the best route to go there.

Thank you John, Repricer and Online, I appreciate your input.

John - thank you, I just spoke with Paypal today, and they assured me that I could do the $-0.01 or below $1, so I will go with that.

Repricer - thank you for providing the link to Stripe, I am going to check them out now.

Online - at this point, I intend to have the software stop after 7 days, and yes, I am dealing with the licensing, activation, de-activation issues now, and it is not a pretty sight.

Hi Lee, I'm pretty sure Stripe allows for this. I think there is an option to offer free trial periods on subscriptions but check this out to see if it 'ticks the boxes', https://stripe.com/docs/subscriptions
    Signature
Amazon repricing software that helps you win the Buy Box more often. eBay repricing also available.

Hi Lee, you may want to take a look at Firesage Digital Goods, which actually integrates PayPal Digital Goods and Stripe into a single payment and download process from your own site. I'm not sure it supports subscriptions, but looks interesting for your situation: Firesage Digital Goods, Simply Selling and Delivering your Digital Products
