Just started using Magento Go (trial). I can't seem to find a free or low cost plugin without a monthly charge that will automate the tax sales rules, etc...Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I am not sure what you mean here. Define automating your sales tax rules. Magento Go out of the box should allow you to set up all your sales tax rules at once and then not worry about it till later. What needs to be automated?

      Hello Chris,

I need to collect tax from the following: Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming?

I need to set up the tax rates that are appropriate for my business. Tax rates have to be at a zip or postal code level to allow for city and county variations in rates.

I think when I have created my tax rates, I have to specify how the tax rates apply using a tax rule. A tax rule defines what rates to use and when.

I have to create multiple tax rates and tax rules that can be applied to different types of products or to different customers if necessary.

That is what I meant by tax rules.

Well, here's why I didn't go with CoreCommerce or BigCommerce, or....because I want to use TaxCloud. TaxCloud will actually automate your tax sales, figure out whether it should be at the county or state level, etc., and file your sales tax for you for FREE, monthly. One huge headache gone. They will be interfacing with Magento by the end of the year. CoreCommerce does not plan to use them, and BigCommerce either. They only work with a select number of Carts.

In addition CC and BC, Shopify have monthly hosting fees. I'll stick with Magento which I have installed on a hosting plan that allows for multiple domains at no extra cost.

And I switched to Magento Community which has more features and additional plugins, although their sales plugin requires additional cost.

Glad to hear that. Other Magento users have been giving you good solution for your tax rules issue. That should not big problem. Be patient and take time, instant work won't drive you good output.

I never have experience with Magento Go, just using Magento Community Edition since 2008.

        Good luck and Happy Selling.

Yeah, I would recommend trying one or two other platforms at the same time before going into too much setup of just one. Magento Go is going to have lots of functionality but for new users, you might find shopify or bigcommerce a little easier.

As is the case here with the tax rates, the functionality was already there but maybe a little out of sight. I think trialling a few at the one time will give you a good comparison of their related support teams which is often overlooked. Hope this hasn't gone too far off the original post koal.

For set various tax rate for various state, you need to do below steps...

Creating tax rates for your States/Provinces in Magento:

    1) Select Add New Tax Rate.
    2) The Tax Identifier can be whatever you specify to identify the state and tax rate.
    3) Select the Country this state or tax rate is in.
    4) Select the State or Province.
    5) If the tax rate is the same for the entire State or Province, select NO for the Zip/Post is Range. If your State or Province has multiple tax rates within it, you will choose YES here, and then add the Zip/Post Range to and from.
    6) Add the Rate Percent for that zip/post for the State/Province and/or the Zip/Post Code range. You will then add additional entries for the remaining zip/post code ranges that have separate tax rates within your State/Province.If there are none, move on to the next State/Province.

Uploading tax rates for your States/Provinces in Magento:

    1) Go to Sales / Tax / Import/Export Tax Rates.
    2) Choose to Export Tax Rates. This way you have a copy of the spreadsheet.
