Hello , a great tool to anaylze why your magento website running slow is GTmetrix | Website Speed and Performance Optimization

General things you can do to speed up magento are

    1) Enable Caching in Magento

    2) Host your magento website on dedicated server.

    3) Merge CSS and JS Files

    4) Enable Compilation

    5) Enable Gzip Compression in .htaccess , you can do this by uncommenting this part

    #php_flag zlib.output_compression on

I agree with the above posters but have a few other suggestions.

    1. CDN- we started using a CDN and it made a BIG difference in page loading times.

    2. GOOD HOSTING- There is no way around it. Magento is a beast and requires a robust server, preferably by a company that specializes in Magento hosting. There are tons of optimizations that a host familiar with Magento can do to squeeze our more performance. We use a company called Nexcess.net and they are quite good.

    3. The #1 way to speed up Magento is to use a Full Page Cache. This comes standard with Enterprise version but is a 3rd party extension for Community Edition. This is kind of complicated to implement but makes a HUGE difference. Page load times go from 4-5 seconds to <1 sec.
