Hello, I launched my site Survival Gear Off the Grid Prepper and Emergency Preparedness about two months ago and have been using mainly pay per click ads to drive traffic. I am doing some social media on facebook and twitter as well as writing weekly blog posts. The problem is that I haven't made a single sale and I can't figure out why. I am selling these same items at the same price on ebay without a problem but for some reason the store just isn't converting. Can you guys take a look and let me know if you see something that I should change or tweak as I am not sure what do do about it. From what I understand for every 100 visitors I should have at least one sale is that a reasonable expectation?

I have tested the checkout process and everything works fine so no issue there.

Thanks

I think your site looks pretty good. Visually I like it. From a consumer standpoint I would emphasize that all transactions are safe and secure better. I see your seals at checkount but I think people might miss them. I would also suggest some way of finding the shipping cost for orders under $100. I dont like and I dont think others like waiting to go thru checkout for the shipping costs.

I would also say you are probably in a niche that people look a whole lot before they buy. Your low price guarantees look good. Are you promoting your website in any way with your ebay sales? Including a flyer maybe.

Your site looks good. I'd like to see slightly larger product images on the home page. The top half looks really good but as you scroll down the images don't do it justice.

I'd be tempted to use clicktail or inspectlet to record visitors to see what they are doing? There may be issues you are not aware of.

You could try live chat or something like that in case people have questions?

This is what I noticed as soon as I saw your site:

    1. Too much going on especially on the top half of your site (Which is usually the most important one). Make it clear and concise. It's your job to 'guide your visitor by the hand' and take them to the check out. Lots of little bells and whistles were popping out as soon as I landed on your site. Especially around the header area.

    2. I was using Safari (Mac) browser and things look like they are not properly aligned. Use your analytics to make sure what is the most popular browser for your visitors and see how your website looks in that one as well.

    3. When I hover over your links they fade to white (Disappear).

    4. I wanted to go further but I think the main thing you need to do is 'simplify' everything. The look, and the functionality and then see if that decreases the bounce rate on your site. If it does, keep making it easier and it should get more people clicking on your 'add to cart' button.

    5. Before worrying about conversions, get people to click on your 'add to cart' button first. Then from there you can work on the shopping cart section of your site and eventually start getting conversions.

    6. If you are getting targeted visitors <1000. Yes you should be making sales on the daily.

    All the best!

    Thank you for the feedback

Re: BKenn01 - so do you think it would be better if I listed the shipping cost on the product pages or should I create a universal 2.99 flat rate shipping for all orders under $100 seal? I can't send a flyer out with ebay orders as it violates their terms of service so for now just pay per click, word of mouth, and social media.

RE: Ecom advice - I actually signed up for clicktail just before I created this post so I will be checking that. I will also increase the image size

Yes, I definitely think you should promote the Flat Rate $2.99. That is a fair price for shipping.

Thanks Bkenn I'll set that up. Any advice as to where to place it on the site?

RE: Joopy, I woul'd say that 90% of that traffic was from pay per click ads on google and bing while 10% came from social media.

If anyone else could provide feedback on the site it would be much appreciated.

Looking at it on my ipad is a poor experience im afraid. The header is not aligned with some words unreadable due to colour clashes.

Very 'busy' above the fold which doesn't endear the site to the user.

I suggest optimising the site for mobile users and think of your homepage as a guide rather than a point of sale. Most likely people looking at your site are doing so having used very specific keyword searches. So they are looking for a specific product and need the 'guidance' of the home page to lead them there.

I see no issue with your cart and postage.

Thank you Woo I will check it again. Based on Terry Mason's post I just disabled the mobile site (which was very easy to navigate but didn't have the flair of the normal site) so that may be causing some issues. I'll have to try to find a happy median between the two but that may take some time to have developed

You would be better of moving your header menu to the footer freeing up some space for clearer sales driven links.

At the very least the header menu colour needs adjusting as currently it's unreadable.

The older mobile version is a far better user experience, although sparse. The centred logo is far better, stamping home your brand.

Good luck with the development and see the site through the eyes of the user. Give random people a task of searching your site for a product they are unfamiliar with, asking them to rate your site on the following.

    1. Ease of navigation
    2. Would you buy from the site

Get those two right and the rest can be solved afterwards.

Anytime you are getting plenty of visitors but no conversions it can only
    be a few things.

1.Your call to action or sales page is not simplistic enough for checkout.
2.The traffic you are getting is not interested in your niche.

Check out where your traffic is coming from and then install like clicky
to evaluate how people use your site.

You are obviously getting shoppers and browsers rather than serious buyers. How are you getting your traffic and where is it coming from? If you tell me that, I can tell you why you are not getting good conversion rates.

That's just one possibility. There are other reasons why your products aren't converting.

I think if you are not selling and you are getting all those leads, it could be that your keywords are too broad. I would suggest changing your keywords and making them more specific. Also, make sure you check out what questions people are asking you via chat and on your contact form, maybe you need to add more questions and answers within your content.

It sounds like your visitors aren't the right kind. Although the website does look a little out of sorts in places, the fact that nobody has bought anything would imply your ads and keywords aren't specific enough. Try phrase match and ensure your ads are really clear about what you're selling. Try a special offer and specific landing page to test if that strategy is working any better.

Wow thanks for all the feedback.

So It seems like a mixed opinion that the site looks good or it looks sketchy. I know things can and should always be improved and I will keep scaling it up to be better looking, I am already working on a few things i.e. New Logo, & Side panel update I'm also looking to make a few changes to the header.

on a side note I have met some of my competitors and they are above 1% conversions and their sites, in my opinion don't even look half as good as mine

Here is where 90% of my traffic is coming from

Google Adwords and Bing adwords pay per click. I am running exact match campaigns and the most clicked are as follows

[Solar oven] which takes them directly to the solar oven product page
[fire starter] which takes them to the fire category page
[watch phone] which takes them directly to the GPS Watch phone product page
[food storage] which takes them to the food category page
[paracord bracelet] which takes them to the paracord category page

here is an ad that I am running for fire starters

      Fire Starters
Survival Gear Off the Grid Prepper and Emergency Preparedness
      Best Emergency Fire Starter
      Highest Quality and Lowest Price

BTW. I have not had a single optin and haven't had a single person ask a question on live chat or on the survey.

      Thank you

In my opinion, the website does not look too good. The featured product section has many issues, please fix the layout issues seen below such as the extra spacing between pictures and price and also where the bottom price lies over the border. Make font size under categories and popular brands the same. Fix the missing borders for fb and google buttons. Remove huge footer space. There's a lot of categories on very top menu, maybe remove some. Make it as user friendly as possible and hire a professional to redo your page. I have tested this on Firefox.

Another very important thing I noticed are your product descriptions. Please rewrite all your product descriptions in your own words and add more details to them.

          Thanks for your input Randy.

I went and fixed the following things
          Category and popular brands text,
Color of Navigation Bar, search and 5% off buttons,
changed the text on top nav bar (hopefully it's easier to read)
Added a camoflauge background (what do you guys think about it?)
I fixed the text on the featured items but need to redo all my images so they are all the same size,
I fixed the footer gap as well.

I will be modifying all the product details (will take a while to complete)

Is there anything else you guys can recommend so I can get it going?

    Hello,

Your site looks ok but there are some issues on category pages that would perhaps put some people off buying.

The key here is to do some a/b testing to find out what actually works rather than speculating on what might be wrong. However, that isn't always practical when you are waiting for sales to roll in so here are a few pointers..

First of all I would try to factor shipping into the cost of the product so you are able to offer free shipping, this has help massively on previous sites I've worked on. It may also be worth offering/highlighting free returns.

I tested your site search function in Chrome using the search phrase 'fire starter' and there were images missing. Click here to see the screenshot. The formatting on some of your product pages is also messed up.

Also while browsing the site this popped up 'Welcome to Essentialpreps, In order to help us improve the Customer Experience, Would you mind helping us out by answering a couple questions? What brought you to our site today? and What would make you more likely to buy from us?' Obviously there are some errors there that need addressed...

Take a good browse through your website using various browsers and I'm sure it will flag up some similar issues.

From what I can see you are running a PPC campaign. It appears that you are showing on keywords such as flint firestarter, solar box cookers, emergency food and gps watch tracker.

If you take the keyword flint firestarter, for example, that keyword could be used by someone that wants to learn about flint firestarters, read reviews or find out how they work etc. It may be better to try and focus on keywords likely to convert better such as 'buy flint firestarter' and then expand to more generic phrases. I would recommend doing this using a mixture of exact match, phrase match and modified broad match but not broad match...

The traffic volume will be less compared to more generic search phrases but you will have more of a chance of converting that customer.

I'm not sure if you are using product listing ads? If not consider using these too as they usually convert better and the cost is usually lower too. Consider using remarketing to get customers back on the site that have left without converting. If you are a beginner, use something like Adroll as it is very easy to set up.

Your website also states that you have a huge selection, that's not really true...

I suggest that you get all the visual problems resolved, think about your offering, maybe run promotional offers with a time constraint and see how it goes.

    Best of luck,

    Gordon Campbell

Thanks Gordon, I will work on the things you suggested next week. I already started to create a new adwords campaign utilizing the buy and for sale terms to narrow down the traffic. As for Product Listings I just figured out laat week that my data feed wasn't uploaded to google so i am in the process of having it updated I will be utilizing the product ads once I am able to. As for the huge selection I am constantly updating products so I will eventually get there.

---UPDATE--- Since I changed the background image from black to Camo and changes the header bars and buttons from blue to dark green I had my First sale along with two others and a phone call all within 24 hours of changing it so things are looking hopeful.

thanks for all your help and input I really appreciate it.

          Hello,

Glad to see you got some conversions. It must feel good.

I see you are using the Million Dollar template from BBF. Interesting to read the feedback on the design after all the hype about how great it is. I have got template too and tried it at Bigcommerce, but just BC and I did not gel. I just did not like their user interface and found their api unreliable.

I switched to Shopify and did my best to replicate the template. The site is SpartaDog - Performance Gear for Working Dogs | SpartaDog and it too is not converting as well as I would like. It's at about .6% and I need to get it up.

The fact that both sites have the template as their basis makes me wonder if the template is not as good as promoted.

One thing I noticed was the really high bounce rate on product pages, especially from Amazon product ads.

Clicktail has proven to be very useful. It lets you watch a recording of the users movement around the page. One thing I see on product pages is a tendency to linger on the photo and price area then a quick scroll to the bottom and then they bounce. I think it's either they were looking for related products, comments or something else in the footer and did not like what they found or did not find.

I just added related products to the bottom and will see if that helps.

I would really suggest trying clicktail - they have a free version which should work for you.

I'm here in Long Beach so maybe our paths will cross some where along the line.

Good luck with getting the conversions up.

When people buy they use SEARCH. The top search engines are Google and YouTube. Organic traffic seems to work better because people trust websites that naturally show up at the top of Google. They also search Amazon and Ebay because they're protected by the feedback system. Sell on those websites and give people a 10% discount if they shop on your main website. Include this offer with each item you ship off.

it never was and never will be about what other people (Fellow Marketers) think about your Ecom store. Either as a marketer or thinking as a customer point of view. Marketers cannot justify the fact in a reliable way - everyone have their own opinion and preferences and you cannot simply please them all - With due respect that's what I think.

I might be wrong but I am yet to see a single answer on these kind of review questions which feels - yes this is it.

It's about Data.. let's the data speak and when you see the outcome you will be surprised.

So, to begin with - do you have Google Analytics goals setup ? Are you tracking each and every movement of the visitor who landed on your site and left ? are you able to find out what exactly they were looking for - where they landed and where they left ? if yes you will pretty much know why they left as well..

90% people might say they didn't made a purchase because of certain seals not there but can you trust that information? what if your data tells you that they left right from the product page itself ? (Reason can be anything - lack of reviews, lack of product info or something else like shipping information- you never know and you cannot guess or assume).

so, if what i said makes sense, start working on gathering data , GA goals are perfect fit for this and find what whether they are leaving from your site.

Once you have that information, your next step will be to keep making changes until the data says people are getting past that step and the cycle goes on.

if you are able to figure out which page they leave and have hard time thinking what might be the reason - install heat map tools to find that out instead of doing guess work again.

Yeah. it will cost you money if you are using paid traffic and effort to but hey building a successful ecommerce store is not as easy as described in the books.

PS: I would strongly recommend to install remarketing tags on your store so you can reach to the people who left your site at a later point once you have a better converting website.

    Hope that helps..

re: Greg, Thank you, Currently the only coupon code I have is generated when a customer subscribes to the discount club on the header. I will be looking into promotions as well I do sell on ebay and amazon but I don't let my ebay customers know about my ecommerce site because of ebays rules. I don't want to slip a flyer in a box and risk losing the business I built on ebay.

re AMC: yes I am running PPC and will be putting more work into social media. I currently dont have a list to email but I will have a campaign in place to market to them when the time comes. as for offline I had some flyers made up and asked my friends and family to pass them out. I am talking to a local radio station to see what kind of deals they can give me, that's about it for now I plan to start building a presence on some of the forums that are in my niche but haven't gotten around to that yet.

From what I understand for every 100 visitors I should have at least one sale is that a reasonable expectation?

I have tested the checkout process and everything works fine so no issue there.

Does your store have any coupon codes? Are you using any promotions to lure buyers in?

I assume you have an online marketing strategy and are actively doing online marketing? i.e PPC, Social, Email etc?

If yes, great, you should see results. I'd add this, and lots of folk seem to forget about it in the age of digital; offline marketing. Are you working on your offline strategy? Implementing traditional media, events or even just word of mouth?

    Hi mate,
I am in India and i think your site is slow.
your site is ok it can be better do little more homework before you promote your website
    background images are not required
improve onsite seo and do keyword research

your product page does not look impressive to me others might differ

Peacock Adjustable Paracord Bracelet, Survival Bracelet Metal Shackle

here i see product image is also not good shadow is there
    image need to be redone.

your script might have many options like
    adjusting home screen
    product page
    menu on left
shop by price and other options
then on right side you can use bestseller, related product modules in your cart
more product of the same manufacturer

    1) create youtube videos
do bookmarking for each video, blog commenting and forum post backlinks for each product video
    yes get backlinks for youtube
    2) on twitter follow those who are your ideal customers

forum posts and forum signatures have helped me rank my videos on google and youtube which get traffic to my site

and yes i use other video sites also, and few accounts in each video site, forum posting / signature is main backlinking method which has helped me most of the time blog commenting is also easy and good method but over spammed

what works for me may not work for you so you have to be dynamic ready to change and try different things.

Don't forget FREE shipping on orders of a certain size. If you have the lowest prices I would also recommend adding your products to shopping comparison websites. You should also join some rating websites for e-commerce stores that give you badges that you can include at the bottom of your website. It makes your store look more legitimate.

I would do a search on google for your best keyword. View the source code on these 10 sites. Find the keywords the top 10 sites are using. Then add those keywords to your keyword meta tags within your source code. Your site looks good. Maybe you just need better keywords.

    Hi Anomale,

as a rule of thumb, expectation stating for every 1000 visitors one sale is truly guaranteeded is general stats...in my experience, whats needed to considere in here is you must get the most targeted traffic...and above all, people with some spending money in their pockets...just research if your niche is fully profitable and theres lots of competition..because if there are so many competitors.. it means theres piles of money going around!! but most important thing.. dont give up and keep yourself motivated and moving forward..success is 99% of perseverance!! take care mate!!

I think the site looks good .. What you need to do is bring people in on the page of the site that is specific to what they want. If you are using paid traffic link to the category page ex. Fire starters. Send them to the main page of your fire starters.

You may already do this I have found that many people send their customers to the main page and make them search to find the info they want and we all know people nowadays want easy.

      Thanks for the input guys,

to date I have had four sales all in one day a week ago and since then I haven't had any more sales.

I have added new exact match targeted keywords by adding for sale, where to buy, buy, etc... words and phrases before and after the main keywords

I am in the process of outsourcing / hiring a writer to redo all my product descriptions and write for my blog but haven't found anyone that meets my expectations yet. I'll keep searching

I secured a couple new product lines and I will be adding the new products to the site as well

I am directing traffic directly to either the category pages or product pages
I learned that after wasting my first $100 lol

What do you guys think about the Footer? I have been viewing the clicktale replays and have seen quite a few people scroll down to the bottom of the page then back up

    Anomale,

    - Your header got too many things on it which will confuse your customers
i recommend you make more clearer. Make your first slider all about your services instead of putting them on the header.

    - Tell your customers everything about your service in a clear & big font on the first slide.

    - i noticed that you don't have a footer on your website. i usually get a lot of clicks from the footer area in my website. try to put your products categories on footer area.

-Too much text in Contact Us page make it more simpler and put a contact form if someone wants to contact you by email.

    - if you have any old testimonials about your service try to put them on the left side of your website while there is a lot of space over there.

    - "Current Top Sellers" got no pictures for the products CHECK IT OUT you could lose a lot of potential sales.

    - about us page is messy try to organise it more and make your facebook, twitter & youtube links clickable they are not at the moment. try to put them on the left side of your site or on the header section.

    - "Survival & First Aid Kits" drop down menu is not clear put your mouse on it to understand what i'm talking about.

    - i'm sure if you apply these changes the bounce rate will get reduced which could bring you more sales.

    All the best mate.
    Cheers

I am in the same niche as you, and I am having the same problems as you. I get a lot of impressions and clicks but no conversions. People stay on my site for an average of 5 minutes or more and look at an average of 8 pages. I have even implemented a lot of the suggestions here but I can't get anyone to convert. It's pretty frustrating, what gives?

Re: wajdisawaqed - I made the following changes

-cleaned up the header (what do you think now)
      - wil be working on the footer
      - contact us page cleaned up and a form has been added
      - about us cleaned up and the links are now clickable
      - I am creating a Banner slide with our details
      - current top sellers will be fixed and pictures will be added
      - I don't see an issue with the drop down Navigation, what browser are you using?

      Thanks.

      any other feedback is appreciated.

I know from experience that this is really disheartening, especially when you hear that traffic is the lifeblood of an online business. But the truth is that this is just the way the Web has now become.

There are millions of people doing all kinds of business - and many of the people, who are visiting your website - are actually doing the same business that you are doing.

    Hard to believe but true.

Then there are those people who are looking for some sites that are like yours or something similar, but they are not really in the buying mood. These people will first see ten or twenty other sites, if they decide that they want to buy something.

The bottom line is that it is becoming harder and harder to MMO - believe it or not.

    All the best.
