I sell plumbing products on eBay. Recently Moen is cracking down on their distribution and trying to eliminate online retailers. My eBay listings are being pulled for using pics provided by Moen.. I cannot take my own pictures of products for several reasons.. What should I do for pics any ideas?

If you can't do it, post an offer here Wanted - Members Looking To Hire You or here
and have someone go to Home Depot or Lowes with a camera or smart phone.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

Yeah, Robin is right—get someone else to take the photos for you, but to be honest, with today's technology and smart phones it's really easy to take a decent photo. I would imagine Moen have an image library available for resellers—have you asked them or checked that out first?

  • What I would like to know is the reasons you cannot take the photos?

Why would someone truly not be able to do that? Or have an ability to get a photo of the item done?

Especially if it meant the item COULDN'T be sold for a profit? It seems to me if that was the only thing preventing me from selling the item, I'd do all I can to take the picture.

What reasons prevent you from doing it?

well I could it would just take a endless amount of time (or significant amount of money if hiring) since there are around 100 different items in a warehouses not near me. I was more or less looking for creative methods of getting around copyrights on pictures.

"creative methods of getting around copyrights on pictures."

You either have permission to use the pictures, or you don't. There's really no way around that.

I sell on eBay and take my own pictures. I use my iPhone. I set up a little area in my office to take good, quality photos. In fact, recently one of my photos for an item was flagged as being a "stock image." My items sell rather fast because, in part, I have really good pictures of them.

But they're pictures I took myself, not someone else. And if I found someone using them without my permission, I'd be pretty mad. If I can put the time in to take quality photos, anyone can (and I'm very busy!).

If you can find pictures of your products to use with the proper permission, great. Go for it! But stealing someone else's work is unethical and it can land you in a lot of legal trouble if the wrong person finds out.

I don't understand why you can't use their library 'with permission' if you're a reseller. As for getting around copyrights—that's a practice you don't want to get involved with. Apart from it being dishonest, if any company really wanted to enforce their copyright and get compensated for infringement, they certainly could. Copyright law is pretty black and white when it comes to imagery. I would grab my phone, the products and start snapping—you would be done in a day, which is surely time well spent on your business.

Not sure if this help but there are services who edit the photos for compliance. I used Remove The Background packshot and product image clipping service and they did a great job. Not sure about plumbing products but you should check it out.

I wouldn't play around with editing their photos if they've warned you already. Just find free photos on the web, or figure out a way to take the photos yourself.

How many products are we talking about? It it is less than 100 then I would just type the part numbers into Google, hit images and save the ones it finds to your computer and rename them.
