Ok, so I'm trying to do this ebay thing full time, I have enough products to make that happen but I'm not getting enough traffic to get enough sales.

What is your secret?

  • Make sure category is set properly. From my experience, the seller feedback is real important. Become a power seller first! (100+ items).
    • [1] reply
    • Isn't it true that you can't be a power seller if you have more than 3 negative feedback in one of the four dsr categories? Or can you not get that for a 4 month period of time. Also I'm a long ways away from getting to power seller on as far as time because I'm not a year In yet and my feedback is like 95%, you need to have 98% for a year to get to power, and the most product I've moved in a month is 79 items.
      • [1] reply
  • Feedback Feedback Feedback. I have 6500 with only a couple negs and 4 or 5 neutral. I get more for my products because of it. Oh and list a lot of product, the more the better. Dont be a bottom feeder, depending on what you are selling the kind of customer you want (no hassle) will be suspicious if you are to cheap and you will attract the kind that you don't want which i trouble.

I have plenty of ebay traffic, I would like to get more google traffic to my listings.

  • Give beautiful title of item you sell. Beautiful = Targeted.
  • Appropriate keyword titles, Competitive pricing, and including additional information such as UPC's, MPN's and having a higher seller rating. Feedback and account standing and stuff matters systematically for algorithms, not for buyers decision making.
  • once you get power seller the traffic should blow up. my buddy was selling 30-40 items a week, got power seller, built a store, now he's selling 400-600 items weekly.

    good luck..
  • Okay, does feedback help? Sure.

Does a top-rated sellers badge help? Yup.

Do titles help? Of course. As those are used by eBay to match the search query of the potential buyer to the seller's listing.

However, there is something that people haven't mentioned yet. And it's how even the little guy can rank higher than the highest top-rated powerseller.

You need to exploit the views-to-actions ratio.

It's why you need to know beforehand two things: What price the item WILL sell for, and two - what FORMAT will yield that price.

If an eBay seller doesn't know those two things, and is just 'guessing and hoping for the best,' they are in so much trouble. (Or worse yet, they are selling items for what the supplier TOLD them the item will sell for.')

So, when you know those two things, you can list them in such a way where you can elicit actions over time.

    Take this search, for example.

'blender' just type it into eBay.

    A super broad key word.

However, the buy-it-nows at the top have a lot of sales/watchers, and the auctions have a lot of bids! Do you think that is on accident? (They could have more if they exploited offers too)

That is how you rank high.

You need to know the PRICE and FORMAT, then know HOW to elicit the actions - a strategy I've been teaching for years. Even if you're not a top-rated powerseller (yet)
    • [ 4 ] Thanks
    • [2] replies
    • Hi ADE,

What do you mean by format? Are you referring to BIN, auctions, etc.? Or do you mean by category?

I can think of lots of items and services that I can market on ebay, but I always run into a brick wall when it comes to knowing how to get them noticed. My dad is a very successful salesman and the best advice he gave me is not to re-invent the wheel but to imitate success. However for the life of me I can't seem to figure how to consistently get views on eBay.

Michael Ladd new to ebay but not ecommerce. I am also a Amazon buyer and seller much easier.
      • [1] reply
  • Ranking is a real PITA IMO.

I have had listing rank all the way on the top and next day for some unknown reason they went back a few pages just to re appear the following day.

At the end, the only thing that really matters are the sold items on a BIN listing. ( Auction listings are different , obviously )

Sure, views count, watchers count, TRS and great solid feedback counts. But all that combined makes only a small percentage. If ebay makes money on a listing they will rank it higher. Simple as that.

But how to sell if it doesn't have ranking and nobody see's it at page 348 ?

Sell for cheap at breakeven or small profit. When the stuff flies of the shelves, raise the price gradually. That's one way that works for me almost all the time.

If a listing is unsuccessful after a week - end it and relist. New listings will get a bit more exposure and higher ranking.
  • Manipulate keywords in the title.. Also when you're set free shipping you'll get more views. Also don't go for GTC when you sell in BIN. Because when your listing comes to an end the more you'll get views.
    • [2] replies
    • With GTC you won't get free listings, when ebay is running a promotion, they run it every 2-3 months on ebay.co.uk (50000 BIN listings for free, you can list during 5 days Monday - Friday, so it's good to list on Monday for 3 days to increase exposure, and relist them again on Thursday to take the advantage of it).
    • I agree use as many keywords as possible in the title.

Try and keep it readable but include brand, colours, sizes, etc.

The first part is getting your listings found by buyers and then let your listing do the selling with a good description and plenty of quality images.

Also buyers love good seller reputation and free postage.

  • Bingo! I don't do ebay - but if I did (and I used to) - this is the plan I would be doing.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • One final thing here...You can try to drive offsite traffic to your ebay listings to drive up the views and close rate. Using offside SEO and other referral traffic directly to the listings can help out with all of the other methods listed above.
    • [1] reply
    • Just some random thoughts from my experiences... YMMV.

      • Know your "keywords" for your product or item (Use Terapeak, use tools from Ebay Labs - such as CatMan - use Google Keyword Planner, etc.)

      • List your title and category as accurate as possible (And don't write your title in all caps or use extra BS, such as "WOW! LOOK!")

      • Fill in as much information as you can (UPC, MFC, etc.)

      • Quality pictures!!! (Can never be stressed enough! MOST CONSUMERS SHOP WITH THEIR EYES!)

      • Clear, concise, accurate descriptions (If someone is reading your description, they are already interested. Don't lose them because your description was akin to a Tolstoy novel.)

      • Use bold and sans-serif style fonts (WhoWantsToBuyFromAnDescriptionThatLooksLikeThis?)

      • Offer Free Shipping (Just figure the cost in to your price listing.)

      • Make sure your "Handling Time" is set to "One Day" when you create your listing (Free Shipping and "One Day" handling time = Fast N' Free logo next to your listing.)

      • Re-Listing can be the death-knell for an item (If you have to re-list something more than twice, get it off there. Create a new title, manipulate the photos - such as convert from jpg to png - change your description, and consider a new pricing strategy.)

      • Consider using a third-party service such as Auctiva to highlight your item (And also to show off your other items for sale. Some services, such as Auctive, even have totally free plans that work great.)

      • Consider using a service like Photobucket or ImageShack to host extra photos in your description (Or just to re-display the original photos in the description.)

      • If you have a specialty product or category, consider using an outside domain that re-directs to your Ebay store or Items for Sale page (Re-directing domains is cheap and very easy.)

  • What you need to have is proper titles with a keyword in it. You need to set a price that is lower or competitive compared to others and providing as much information such as UPC's, MPN's long with having a higher seller rating is definitely important.
    • [1] reply
    • This is a very common mistake.

Lower price does NOT equal higher turnover.

In fact, it just means you're making less on an item.

      Higher RANKING means higher traffic.

A seller doesn't choose the price an item sells for - a market does. And if you know what the market worth of an item is, why would you sell it for less? Sell it for the MAXIMUM price people are willing to spend for it - and RANK higher than anyone else.

Exploit the views to actions ratio - and if you can capture the views - and funnel the traffic and convert them into actions - then YOU have the sale - no one else does.

A lot of the advice given in this thread is unnecessary work that is making it a lot harder.

Just exploit the views to actions ratio - and have a compelling brand funnel and you can get a LOT of sales and rank higher than anyone.

      Bam. Done.

Oh, and know the market worth so you're not losing money.

      Happy prosperous New Year!

  • I think i'm just not selling the right items, I made one sell this month on ebay and being a new ebay person.

The frustrating thing is the free shipping, my dropshipper charges me 4 or 5 bucks for shipping, if I add that to the item price its going to be way over priced.

I see someone selling a $5.00 item with no shipping. I don't understand how they are making a profit.
  • I've been an ebay member since 05. I buy and sell but my selling strategy is definitely wrong. I have same items as other sellers priced lower and they make 10 sales a day and I don't. And I figure my page views are very low vs the other power sellers selling the same item. I have 100% feedback as buyer and seller and I still don't get traffic to my listings. Any help from the experts would be appreciated.

    Thanks
  • Always do a review or guide of at least one out of every ten items you list.Be detailed and be descriptive and use the same keywords you used in the listing.Example:1984 Michael Jordan NBA Basketball Rookie Card is the title, you then copy and paste that as your first line in the description AND in the review or guide. The more links to other info you have, the higher up you will rank. You can link other sites to your about us page too so utilize every available tool you can.Market on Facebook,Twitter & Pintrest also. These 3 links can be found on your completed listing page on the top right.Dont spam every item in your store to folks, just pick a few good deals or to generate a buzz, throw a few penny auctions with free shipping and no reserve out there. You put 20 NES games out there for a penny shipped, that alone will drive views to your store, thats all you need is that first hook, your awesome listings will do the rest of the work for you!!

This is not directed at anyone in particular in this thread. Rather it is just a general observation (and perhaps an indicator of the Darwinian sales theory.)

There is some great advice throughout this whole thread, especially that which was just proffered by Mr. Evans. However, many sellers on the bay seem to only see and hear what they want to hear... I skimmed over every post in this thread (without really reading any of them) and, alas, I failed to find the magical solution that many people seem to be seeking (here and everywhere else.) Yet, when I went back and re-read every post (in just this thread alone) in a slow and methodical manner, I found eBay's Rosetta Stone collection posted here!

If someone can't catch a sale after all of the advice and theories offered in this thread, then perhaps sales aren't really your thing. eBay long ago abandoned their yard sale mentality and went pro (eBay did, not the expectations or actions of sellers and buyers, just eBay.) Some even considered them to be declaring war on small, individual sellers (ever wonder why Buy.com has been the #1 ranked seller for years now?)

Over the last few years eBay has tightened up their marketing and activity requirements to reflect much higher standards than those that existed before John Donahoe took the helm. So, today's truth for any eBayer is that dumb luck will still score someone the occasional sale; but to have consistent sales one must become an educated seller.

Finally, as my last piece of advice on this topic (because I could never compete with the wealth of information that has already been laid bare throughout this entire thread) for anyone still having problems after reading this whole thread... READ BETWEEN THE LINES. Look at what has not been said (or what actually has been said, but not very clearly.)

First, take a copious amount of notes from this thread for later reference. Then, toss out your belligerent pride and go back to the basics. Focus on the best way to market OFF eBay in order to drive traffic TO eBay. Learn how eBay ranks sales and sellers today (and forget all about how it USED to be done.) If you think Best Buy or any other major corporation signed up on eBay and then started pissing and moaning about how things used to be, then you are in the wrong game altogether and you will fail as a seller on any level of eCommerce.

Next, act as if you are learning about how eBay operates for the very first time and focus on the many things that have taken place since 2008 (especially over the last two years.). Discover the mythical creature that is eBay's Cassini search algorithm. Find all those free services that are offered through eBay labs (and use them!)

Finally, set out to employ a reverse sales strategy - scour the internet, search this forum and others (such as PowerSellers Unite, etc.) and set out to discover the many things that prevent good rankings and the many things that can hinder sellers from even getting to see your marketing efforts. Many people get lost while attempting to create some sort of elite sales matrix and the result is often tunnel vision. If you can create a list of every possible obstacle and every type of action that keeps sellers from getting to the top of the search results, you will have created an atlas that will allow you to navigate the mine field.

The bottom line is that today's eBay is no longer the flea market it used to be. It's a global ocean of eCommerce - and whether or not you like the new rules, eBay doesn't care about your opinion, so if you jump in the water it's sink or swim time. WARNING: No lifeguard on duty!

  • Hello,

I'm new to posting on this forum however I read it frequently. I've done 6 figures on eBay for the past two years and this is the advice I can give:

    1) Pictures - Have at least 5 or more. The bigger in pixels the better.
    2) Store subscription - The higher your subscription the better placement you will get
    3) Handling time - Fulfilling orders within your stated handling time and leaving prompt feedback
    4) Response time - eBay doesn't show metrics like Amazon does on this but believe me they factor it in. Answer customer questions as quickly as possible and if you can't set up your "out of office" reply to do it for you.
    5) I have plenty of stock of each of my items so I use "buy it now or best offer." The more sales you do off a listing the higher that listing will rank so if you have multiples you are better off doing it that way than auctioning them off one by one. Think marathon not sprint.
    6) Based on my analytics, most of my traffic comes from google searches. Be sure that you're using SEO friendly titles and not just jumbling words in there. I suggest really sitting down and thinking about what your customer would likely be searching for and then using the title in a clean way incorporating those words.
    7) If you can I HIGHLY recommend a one day handling time with free shipping. eBay LOVES "fast & free" listings, however if you can't reasonably offer this then don't even try. eBay customers are super sensitive to perceived delays.
    8) As someone above mentioned, really fill out the recommended specifics. The more you comply with eBay's requests the better they will treat your listings.

That's all I have for now. Will be sure to post more as I think of it.

P.S. for the record I am not a top rated seller, I only have a 98.8% feedback however due to my volume I am a power seller. Being a top rated seller definitely helps but it's not everything. When you do the volume in sales that I do it's very hard to please everyone. Negatives will come, just take them in stride and keep it moving.
  • I would imagine that viewing listings that are ranking highly and up against your own would reveal a tonne of valuable information about titles, descriptions and keywords.
  • Why is this thread dormant?
    • [1] reply

    • I don't think it's a dormant thread, I think think people are getting a lot of answers in other avenues and in other threads.

However, I do get a lot of questions from a lot of people regarding getting traffic to their eBay listings.

      These things do matter!

    • Great reads full of amazing info, thanks
  • There is one big secret for getting more traffic on ebay listings, to generate traffic on ebay listing firstly you need to have a good foundation of ebay listing. Best Match in ebay is best to generate traffic on this site, you just take care of few things to raise traffic to your website like keep the appropriate title, keyword should be relevant, don't waste the time and money on putting irrelevant words that buyer never search for.Just add free shipping to Best Match, buyers really like free shipping, it would be grateful to generate the traffic for ebay listing.
    • [1] reply

    • Yes, this is all true, of course, but this is to optimize a title.

And yes, Free Shipping does help.

However, you also want to make sure your listing elicits clicks and then ACTIONS. WHen your listing generates actions then you can rank higher.

When your multi-quantity listings generate conversions, you rank higher again.

When you have a generous return policy - you STILL rank higher over time.

Stack ALL cards in your favor and you will just climb that ladder.
  • I think the Feedback is the most important, but what do we do when a bad buyer gives you a negative feedback for no reason!? I came across eBuyersReviewed, what do you think about it?
    • [1] reply
    • Feedback is important - but it is far from the most important.

Also - you can go to eBay buyers and see their behavior, BUT you have a .0000000000000000000001% change that they will buy from you.

The best way to avoid bad feedback is to have a good business, great customer service, and a phenomenal customer experience.

  • Use proper title. Clear details and you can share on social media always.
  • Your ebay succes is highly based around your reputation as a seller.

You'll need to establish yourself well, this happens by selling as much as you can. and gaining positive feedback.

High volume is absolutely key, this way your defect score will always be low. and your feedback % will be high.

Once you've done this, customers will trust you more, and so will Ebay.

Ebay will then start ranking you more highly in the search results.

Before this though, you need to ensure your listings are polished.

    Hope this helps
  • I do a business card swap with other sellers... some paid some a free swap.
every package that goes out in our network has a business card from each members ebay store.
it keeps our ebay customers within our network
  • Hi,

selling 200 items in auction will cost huge money. I sell graphics on ebay (europe) and each item in 2 categories cost me 6€ for 30 day listing !!!
I not have much products (20 items)

    6€ please notice that.

So wehn you list 200 items that are= $1200 you have to pay upfront to ebay before you have selled one.

And the other problem is, that when I use an ebay shop I make double sales I dont know why. But it is more expensive.

So I must pay the basic shop (39,95€) with 20 items and then 10 items in fix price auction for 30 day each item 6€ additional costs.

So I have fix ebay costs = 99,95€ + ebay fees when I make sales.

Also with an ebay shop I make double sales without- not.
But this has his price on ebay, pay for the shop and then pay additional fees to put shop articles in fix price auctions for 30 days too.

Ebay itself say that with basic shop you have 400 fix price items inclusive (free) but it is a lie, items you put in fix price auctions are not inclusive.

What is your experience with that have more sales with an ebay shop?

    marco005
  • It's hard because other than paying for advertising, their is not a ton of places to promote your ebay store or listings.
    • I would say you for sure need to use social media. Maybe even use a service like hootsuite (they also have a add-on for chrome called 'hootlet' so you can easily share) to share each item to all your social media pages at once!
    • Try sharing your items on coupon/deal websites! Many do not allow it....but look around for ones that do because they already have a built-in customer base and visitors that like to shop! We have just added a forum for sharing auctions to our site (it is a new forum - no users yet for auctions - but that means people will view your items more!) : https://feedia.us/forums/forum/coupo...eals/auctions/
    GOOD LUCK!
  • @freedia,

people on social media platforms are not in buyer mode, so why I should share my ebay products on social media?

Auctiondebeliminator had wrote on his past posts that have an ebay store will be better, because the item you have in an auction listing will show the full feedback profile who is a benefit.

Without an ebay store your auction items will not show full feedback profile.

But my probem is that ebay promote his basic store with 400 inclusive fix price items, yes they are inclusive so long as you put them in the store. So when you put some items from the ebay store to an auction listing- then you must pay the full auctions fees- they also not inclusive. But ebay promise that in their store fee offer.

Webdesign, graphics is hard on ebay, most people look for physical stuff not for services who they not have paypal buyer security........

So when I list my item in auction I get around 160-220 views and get 1-2 sales no more.

    marco005
  • Nobody read my questions?

    @rookie51: when you sell 400-600 items weekly;

how many items you have in your ebay store and how many items you have on auction every week (7 day listing)?
