Struggling to make a good website

Hi everyone. Newbie here.

I'm venturing into the world of making a living via the internet. My first foray will be in the form of a CV/Cover letter editing service, primarily targeted at students and young people.

I have already created a website, unfortunately I do not have any experience with HTML, CSS, PHP or any other internet language, so I decided to go for weebly, a drag and drop website builder.

I have more or less created the content for the website, however the theme/design looks terrible, in fact every one of weeblys themes seems to look very unprofessional. I have seen websites built from weebly that do look good, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it.

What do you guys suggest? Is there another website building service that provides more professional looking website themes that wont put customers off?

I would love to just learn the language and build it myself, however I'm working full time at the moment, so that would be very difficult.

Thanks for any tips you can give me (hopefully I've posted this in the right section, if not then apologies).

I think your website looks really good, especially if this is your first one. I'm not a design expert, but I can say what I would change if it were my site.

First I'd replace the "Welcome" logo at the top with something more custom, like "Professional CV Editing Service" or something like that.

I'd also replace the text in the white block at the top. Start with a good headline like "Land your dream job 2x faster with an upgraded CV" or "If you want to get hired in today's job market, then you need a professional CV" or "Professional CVs increase your chances of getting a job by 200%" or "Your CV is the most important part of your resume" or " If you don't have a professional CV, you won't be seen as a professional" or "The only thing standing between you and your dream job is the right CV" or... you get the idea. I'm definitely not a copywriting expert, so I suggest you look for some headline ideas that have been proven to work. There's a copywriting subforum here if you want to check it out.

If you want to change it up a bit, that upper right page area is a perfect place for an optin box to collect emails for marketing. You could provide a free offer like "5 tips to land a job in 30 days" or a free report going over "The shocking truth about getting hired in today's job market" or something to that effect. Then once people sign up, they get the freebie plus you can set up a weeks worth of emails giving helpful tips and selling them on your service.

The only other things I can think of would be to add a nice professional image or 2 somewhere on the page and talk more about the benefits and why people need to use your services. Again, this is where copywriting comes in.

Personally, when I'm building a site I check out other sites in the same niche and when I see one that has the look I'm going for, I enter the site into http://whatwpthemeisthat.com/ to see if they're using a free theme that I can use, too. WordPress is a popular website foundation that you can use pretty easily without any html, css, coding experience, etc.

Other than that, I think your site is off to a great start! Congratulations and keep at it

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I doubt I'd ever be 100% happy with whatever I made. I just don't want people to click on my site and immediately think 'amature' or 'scam' etc

I will be making some more professional images for the page, and I'll take up your advise on finding a better headline

You can give those website builders a try. They are really easy to use. I have built several websites myself and would recommend ImCreator.com. It's a drag and drop website builder, it's real easy to use, it's powerful and most of all, it's free to use. If you're serious about building your website, then give ImCreator.com a try.

    Danp,

In case of a small website such as yours, I'd use Wordpress. There's no question about it. Go to themeforest.net and pick out a theme. If you don't know how to set it up, there are people that can do it in a day. I've created my own sites quickly and they look better than if I had used any "drag-and-drop" solution.

If you need more help, feel free to PM me and we can talk further. You site is simple enough and marketing strategy is fairly clear! Best of luck!

The best way to learn basic web development I think is to hack existing scripts. Take a popular CMS e.g Wordpress, learn to install it and use it. You'll find that when you have to add integrations, optimize the server, play with the database etc, you'll learn a lot very quickly in regards to running a basic web service.

Sites like StackOverflow will help you with queries but you'll be able to learn a lot from folks there also.

Thanks to everyone. I'll leave my current site up whilst I learn wordpress and give it a go.

I've had 2 or 3 customers already with almost no advertising, so hopefully I should be able to get a good thing going here

As a user, I want to hear what others say before making a decision. In other words, customer testimonials will be important for me. As you have several loyal customers, why not invite them to write an awesome testimonial? They'd like to. Besides, I will suggest you add live chat to your site, which enables you to engage visitors in real time. For wordpress, it's easy to set up, for there are chat wordpress plugins, such as LivePerson, Comm100 Live Chat, etc.

It looks better than you set us up to believe!

A couple of thoughts - I'd get rid of the "Comments" section for two reasons. 1. New customers don't care about random comments, they want to know what you can do for THEM. 2. The first comment I read was apparently a reply from you about "No, I'm sorry we don't do custom CV's." Again, another something that draws a potential client's attention away from what you CAN do for them.

I'd STRONGLY suggest replacing that section with a TESTIMONIALS section where you post RAVE reviews and accolades from past happy clients. Much like Yelp and other review sites, customers are more likely to hand over their money if they see that you've helped other paying clients and that they are very satisfied with your work.

You say you're at Weebly now but I'd encourage you to get your own hosted site as soon as you can afford to do so, so that YOU control your site and won't wake up one morning to find it ... POOOF! ... gone at the whim of some free service.

Best of luck to you - you look like you are very conscientious and do great work!

    Best Regards,

    Ebiz Mom

Hi , Its evident that you are not really liking your website.
The reason could be Design. You think your design is not compelling. What I would suggest here is, First of all, concentrate on the idea of business that you want to do. Then Accordingly think of the content about how will you going to help your customers. Once the content decided, then comes in to the picture "Design". For that sake visit numerous number of website, get one thing from all and Implement that in your design the way you want.

As you don't have much knowledge about Languages of website designing which is a trouble here. But for you HTML is easy to learn, it will take time though. I would suggest hire some language experts, tell your requirements, give the content. This will save many bucks of yours and eventually you will start your business all long.

One word "WordPress". Its a no brainer for a pro looking website without much experience. Make sure your go for wordpress.org and not .com. You want to host it yourself and you will have more control over your site.

And finally buy a premium theme for WordPress. There are plenty of good ones to choose, just Google it and expect to pay no more than $50

Wordpress is the way to go. Easy to install, and the most user friendly CMS out there. ThemeForest has the best themes. Good luck!

Lots of good-looking WordPress themes, but so many of them are difficult to configure if you're a newbie. You might try StudioPress themes for WordPress. Reliable and just very well put together themes out of the box.

For something stylish (but a tad slow, imo), try Elegant Themes.
