Hello All,

I am new to this forum, lots of helpful information on here!

I have been looking at Magento Themes recently, and all you seem to find is the responsive complicated themes. I'm looking for a more basic theme like something simillar to Lowes (Lowe's Home Improvement: Appliances, Tools, Hardware, Paint, Flooring) where you see a simple slideshow and then category images on the home page as opposed to feature products etc. All suggestions are welcome!

Thanks

    jta89,

I highly suggest you use themeforest.net for research. You can also try argentotheme.com - it's a magento theme with awesome support!

Here's my two cents, however. DO NOT rely on a theme to be ready to go right out of the box. DO hire a developer to set up and design your store. The $3-4K will come back to you big time with a good design. This is a very important element and will end up costing you a lot down the road if you decide to put it off.

Just stay away from HelloThemes. We bought a theme package from them on the idea and their selling points that they would fix any bugs in their themes that may arise.

A few months later a Chrome update rendered part of their theme unfunctional. Long story short. They tried to take advantage of me under the assumption that I didnt know how to code html, css and JS. They provided multiple "fixes" that were complete hackjobs. I ended up just fixing it myself.

Just horrible, horrible customer support. I posted on a related Magento forum getting help to fix the issue and Hellothemes created multiple shill accounts in an attempt to slander my name.

      HelloThemes is absolutely HORRIBLE.

        Hi jta89,

While I do understand that you are looking for a theme that is less "complicated", I wouldn't even consider a new theme that is not a Responsive Design. Only Responsive design themes will display well on mobile devices, and the number of visitors on mobile devices is growing very rapidly and will soon eclipse desktop/notebook computer users.

Just because a theme design is Responsive does not make it overly complicated. There are many new Responsive designs that are very well done. In fact, it seems nearly all of the best themes I have seen lately are responsive designs.

Many of the latest themes designs that look complicated are not as complicated as they first appear. Generally, the well design themes allow you to easily disable most of the design features through the Magento admin panel. So if all you want is a slideshow and a category images, you just uncheck the other features that you don't want to use, couldn't be easier.

The latest store I put up was based on one of the new responsive themes (BuyShop) and it took only minutes to install and configure the way I wanted it to look. I usually do lots of heavy modifications, but there was only minimal modifications that were needed outside of what was built into the CMS for the theme. It went up the fastest of any ecommerce website I ever built and was making a profit on the first day of launch, in a competitive niche.

The key is to choose the right theme, one built by a developer that really knows Magento theme development, not someone that is just getting started with their first Magento theme. Look for themes that are very popular and highly rated. Starting with a good theme will cut a significant amount of time and money to get your store going.

I've launched a lot of Magento online stores for my clients, and the truth is, no themes will get you close to what lowes.com have. Yes, you can style it up like them, but for the features, you will need to purchase additional modules etc. While Magento comes with a lot of handy features out of the box, but they are also missing a lot of critical ones that help drive conversions also

A few off my head now such as:

Frequently bought together (What amazon uses - drive higher sales per transaction)
Pre-Order / Call for pricing - Very handy for certain products
Advance Instant Search - Instant show thumbnail and product title, price as you search

Obviously, there are a lot more and the long can go on forever - it always depend on what you need.

    Hope it helps.Thanks.

Well, it depends what you/your client needs.

To be fair, Magento covers a lot of basic and fundamental features, but it also lacks of a lot of powerful features that can help increase conversions and enhance the user-experience.

For example, features like "frequently bought together", "better product configuration (ie: image changes when a different color is selected)", affiliate module etc.

If you're looking to build a powerful store with world-class features, the modules itself will probably cost you at least $2000. However, on the bright side is that you will have one of the most advance and feature-rich store available. My clients were super impressed with it, and compared to what they were using - it was completely no match.

They just couldn't believe how they were selling on a crap platform back then. lol
