Hey Guys!

I'm looking into starting an e-commerce site and I found a couple of sellers on Alibaba.

Basically I'm now contacting them asking them if they do dropshipping to US and European customers but they aren't replying to any of my e-mails.

My E-mails went like this :

""Hi Ms He,

I am a online marketer and I just wanted to ask you to see your catalog on your product a.

Are you guys willing to drop ship your products(direct shipping to consumers)?

If so, how much would flat rate shipping fee per product be?

Best,

Jeffery
""

Am I approaching this the wrong way?

Also, what other platforms are good for finding manufacturers that could do drop-shipping?

Thank you guys a lot.

You might like to build a rapport first. Ask them general question about product and pricing. Then, ask them about shipping option. Lastly, ask them about drop-shipping.

Try the chat function rather then sending mails.

But there is more to it. A manufacturer will most likely not drop ship for you. As in no chance.
You can find drop shippers in China or HK that will appreciate your biz but do not think that it comes cheap as heck. Shipping cost's money, regardless where you are. International shipping for smaller items are by weight so not really a "flat rate " for those items. Most postal services around world charge in increments by weight e.g - 0-20 gr. / 21 - 50 gr. / 51 - 100 gr. etc

Flat rates apply for larger shipments like the 20kg #8 Jumbo DHL box.

Shipping materials, packing and a host of other expenses are all part of the unit price.Drop shipping is not really profitable when done from China.

The product that I'm trying to sell is...... "not something you'd like your mother to find out" and I've noticed that a lot of these sellers do not have a chatting option. I've already installed Aliwangwang (the alibaba chatting software) but these guys don't seem to have this option available thus I am forced to sent them an e-mail.

Flat rates apply for larger shipments like the 20kg #8 Jumbo DHL box.
Yes I most likely will be dealing with single products that are at least... say 50kg.

      ----------------------------------------------------------

Thanks again guys! What I'd really like to know now is what should a beginner like me do when I get stonewalled like this? Do I simply move onto another product? or do I approach another souring platform (if so which one)?

I agree. Alibaba is not the ideal source for drop shippers. Most of these companies are either manufacturer's or traders and most are based in China. You'll find in most cases that products are not even made and "ready to ship." They will need a minimum order first- anywhere from 50 units to 10,000 units. For dropshipping, I recommend Worldwide Brands. You can research the forum and you'll find a lot of different opinions on them. I think they are good for what they are. They do have a lot of suppliers that are willing to drop ship. The main criticisms are:

    1. The products are not exclusive meaning you're competing against all other Worldwide Brand members
    2. You are not dealing with manufacturers, so by the time you sell the products, the margins are slim.

I personally don't focus on drop shipping because of reason 2. However, I have drop shipped a few products and I've been happy with it. I also have friends that drop ship exclusively with great success. Be aware though that you'll need to potentially list hundreds to thousands of products to make a decent income this way. Drop shipping is all about volume. Good luck!

    Back to the drawing board.

If you want to continue sourcing for this particular product you have to approach from a different angle now. Problem is the weight of a single unit. 50 kg is not doable for shipping with postal services or courier. They cut off at 31.5kg to all Countries and 25kg ( i think ) for some others.

Single units of 50kg or around that number is freight. Now you gonna need to find an importer for that product in the Countries you want to sell it to or LCL / FCL: yourself and distribute the product.

If you want, I can QQ with your source or simply call them on the phone and see if they have a distributor outside of China

Most of the people that you are contacting are middlemen with no agreements with manufacturers and likely can't ship items for you. Also, most manufacturers won't know what the term "Dropshipping" means.

If I've ever talked a company into dropshipping, it was after I had already bought items from them before and they really valued my business.

To a distributor or a manufacturer, "dropshipping" - "I the distributor/manufacturer invests in all of the labor, the cost of making the item, the cost of shipping it out, and I have to keep my prices low enough for someone to make a profit off of me while this other person sits at a desk and kicks their feet up while I take all of the risk." - Asking is almost a spit in the face to some companies.

You'll find that the majority of suppliers on Alibaba (or the express site) are only there to sell & ship products in bulk - they won't provide the full drop shipping service that you're looking for.

If you look around, you may be able to find companies that can provide a fulfilment service on your behalf, for products you buy in bulk from alibaba, but in this case, you'll be buying stock in bulk (rather than selling it 'on demand / on sale')

Alibaba would most definitely NOT be on my dropshipping list. They are huge costs for international shipping because I doubt most of your clients will be in the Asia area. On top of that if you don't know the language at SOME point in time there will be a language barrier believe it or not.
