If you dont have a ware house in USA. You can even contact rent one there. Make your deal in china and set the shipping address for rented warehouse in USA. OR deal with a distributor to sell his products online which will be back to back order. For this you have to keep a close eye on inventory management.

Hey newbieinternet - i'm new on this forum too. Just wondering if you are seeking to import from China despite your Vietnamese connection because of QC issues? I know its way cheaper to produce in Vietnam, only big con is the real lack of infrastructure and QC problems

Importing is easy... sales are the hard part.

Before you invest any money into products my advice would be to read the 4-Hour Workweek and test niches before opening your wallet.

The author, Timothy Ferris, discusses how to run tests to validate your ideas before spending money on products.

You can get it for under $15 on Amazon: The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere,...The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere,...

First of all you'll need someone to receive the goods in the US.

A company or person must be on the ISF filing.

Alternatively you can create your own corp. from abroad and this will serve as the receiver.

But it's gonna be kind of hard to dance on 3 weddings at the same time

One could argue the opposite, I've found that if a product is priced well and in demand, sales are relatively straight forward. Fulfilling orders, and more importantly, handling returns, are pretty much the real test for your operation.

Ecommerce is about repeat customers i.e loyalty, and if you can handle returns effectively, you won't retain those customers.

If you have a reliable supplier, are pre-qualifying your customers by providing accurate information and product descriptions, have competitive pricing, are using a reputable shipping company (UPS, FedEx, Post, etc) and offer reasonable shipping costs, your returns should be minimal.

Anytime returns become an issue then something within the above process is broken.

In regards to the OP's question, listen to alksense. ImportExport also has a product that's reasonably priced.

What you want to do is not super easy, but definitely attainable. There are 3rd party fulfillment services that will handle your inventory and ship it out for you within the U.S. Shipwire is a popular one. There are several. Personally, I use fulfillment by Amazon because it allows me to sell on Amazon.com as well as Ebay, and my own websites. They handle all the fulifllment and for everything sold on Amazon.com, the fulfillment service is completely automatic! You may be interested in THIS post which explains how to "work from anywhere" This answers the second half of your question.

For the first half of your question, I will say importing can be scary. I've done it for years, and learned though a LOT of mistakes, but I could have saved myself a lot of trouble by learning from ImportExport. He's the "local export" on this topic. I would suggest picking up his book! It will be a HUGE help to you!

        Hi newbieinternet,

Sorry about my absence. I blame Bill Gates and the Windows 8 system on my new computer.

Nobody has yet given a direct answer to your question, but I believe it is quite straightforward. Several of my students are using a fulfillment service with great success. By the way, it is not Amazon.

They place their orders in China, and have them shipped direct to the fulfillment service who receive the shipment after it has cleared Customs.

On my recommendation they are paying extra for door to door delivery, and this includes Customs clearance. There is no problem for the fulfillment service to receive the goods on their behalf. They provide a power of attorney for the shipments. This means that the legal requirements are all properly dealt with.

You will have to pay the shipping company for any duty or taxes before they will deliver to the fulfillment service. You can usually do this by credit card.

They email details of their customers' orders direct to the fulfillment service who then very promptly pack and ship to the customers.

The process of buying is where you have to take great care. Make sure you deal only with genuine manufacturers, otherwise you are throwing money away. Make sure you are dealing with reputable businesses, not simply ones that have been "verified" by one of the popular sourcing sites. Even "Gold Suppliers" may not be what they appear to be. After all, they are just ordinary verified suppliers who pay some money to buy gold status.

For those who follow my posts I would add that Gold Supplier status is on sale yet again at a 90% discount, so before long almost every supplier will be Gold Suppliers. That will surely give buyers a warm inner glow.

Lots of profits to be had sourcing products.

I once imported a large shipment from China. It totaled about 125 large boxes. Since I was a complete novice at the time, I asked the manufacturer to load the goods on a ship for me and provide them my information. About 20-25 days later I got a call from a freight company in the US advising me that my goods had arrived and they were with Customs. Before I picked up the goods at a local warehouse, I had to release them from US Customs and pay a tariff. It was a nightmare. Once I got the paperwork done, I went with my father and picked up the boxes. Took about a month from the initial order to final pickup.

What I learned from the experience is that it is definitely worth hiring a Customs broker and a freight forwarder to deliver you the pallets. An adequate warehouse space is a must.
