ebay/Amazon questions

I'm thinking of getting into eBay and Amazon with some new products and have some questions for the experts here.

Suppose the product in question is a private label product that I'm buying. I'm planning to put my own label on it.

Do your conversion rates on eBay and Amazon improve if you build out a website for it? Or does that really matter with those market places?

You don't NEED a website right away, but it DOES matter in the long run. If people start buying your brand and want to find out more, where will they go? If you want to build a list of loyal buyers, how will you do this (Ebay doesn't really allow this and Amazon REALLY doesn't- you'll need your own website for this.) I would recommend at LEAST getting the .com registered- and then you can build a website later if you'd like. I've found it's best to build the website sooner rather than later. This adds legitimacy to your brand (imagine if a company like "hasbro" didn't have a website- they would not be recognized as the brand in toys that they are today)

I'm not sure about the conversion rate INITIALLY, but I can tell you that my conversion rate has increased tremendously from my website with my ESTABLISHED brands -customers go to the website FIRST to find new products, promotions etc- then click through to Amazon (affiliate links to my own products) and then buy.

Private labeling is a lot of fun and can be extremely profitable. Good luck and I hope this helps!
