I am planning to set a shopping cart for my online business. I need some good ecommerce software from a reliable company having global presence. Please suggest me some good options..I am confused whether to use hosted version or self-hosted. My second concern is that I do not have a big IT team to manage shopping cart software. Please recommend a good company

There are a ton of great options out there!

Magento is one of the most popular and widely-used shopping cart solutions.

The "Community Edition" is free and open-sourced...but if you're not pretty dialed in when it comes to programming, you might want to hire a developer to help you build out your site and create the functionalities that you want.

Volusion is another great offering. Setting it up is a little less complex and involved than the process is with Magento, but you might still want to get in touch with a designer, as opposed to a developer when you're setting up your Volusion website.

BigCommerce is another option. They make it really easy to create and manage your online store, with a super easy-to-use interface and setup process.

    Hope this helps!

So I would recommend UltraCart.. they've been around for a long time and the staff are very knowledgable.. they also have a great document section for support.. You will also discover that they are already integrated with many other popular services out there including call centers and fulfilment centers.. Comes in handy for saving costs, i'd look into them.

What do you need your shopping cart to do?

    Physical versus downloadable product
How many categories, sub categories will you have?
How difficult are your option/option sets?
How many products? How many SKU's?
Do you need to track inventory by SKU?
    International or domestic only?
    How are you shipping items?
Does it need a POS or to integrate with a POS?
    Any special functionality you need?

This would be a good start to answering your question. Based on the fact you don't have a budget for managing the tech side of things, this to me indicates hosted site since you don't need to worry about it. If you answer the question above, we can direct you to the hosted cart that has the most features to fulfill your needs.

Unless you're a developer it's best to avoid anything open-source or self-hosted like Magento, Open Cart, oscommerce etc.

So that leaves you with a hosted solution like Shopify, Bigcommerce or Ashop.me (where I work).

Shopify is easy to use but has less functionality, Bigcommerce is more flexible but much more difficult. Both charge monthly fees in addition to transaction fees on all sales you make.

Ashop.me is a little different. We have very similar functionality to Shopify and Bigcommerce, but we also have a marketplace (think Ebay or Amazon) where you can list your products for sale, without any listing fees.

You can go with self hosted, so that you can have own domain name and you can have full control over your site , also you no need big IT team to manage it, you can handle with 1 or 2 person.

I use a self-hosted Wordpress blog with Woocommerce for the ecommerce solution. Once you have the extensions and theme you want, there are no monthly fees for running the shop.

Magento is self-hosting, Shopify or BigCommerce if going the hosted route. Starting out, I'd recommend the latter.

Use anything besides Zenchart. It's like the most hackable chart out there.

This is really good advice -- the tool that's going to help you the most is going to be the one that can scale itself and grow along with your business. Finding something that integrates with the tools you already use is going to help you out. Finding something that integrates with tools you'll want to use in the future will help you out even more.

  • Hey there,

Good suggestions in here! I recommend ZenCart, 3dcart, Magento or Shopify to host your site. Shopify is superb when it comes to easy website design (just check out their examples page). Our software integrates with these carts to automatically manage your inventory and sales orders. So, you have some options for managing and running your ecommerce business. Good luck!

I personally recommend Magento. It takes some time getting used to but its a great shopping cart and is easily customisable. My website ModernHQ - High Quality Furniture At Affordable Prices is running it and i am completely happy with it so far!
