Paid Godaddy for Website Builder Program

Hello,

I would like to contribute to this site and not just ask for help but of course I could use help. Rather than "ask" I'll just simply leave my story. I have owned several businesses and have worked very hard for them (a lot of manual labor), I have always thought there's got to be an easier way to make money (on the web perhaps). So I started buying domain names and have collected 30 of them. I told my brother about these names and one in particular he said to make use of. He thought it was a great idea for a drop shipping business. I inquired with Godaddy on their website builder program and for $1529 I would have a working drop ship site that would communicate orders to individual suppliers. I thought that was a good deal, I'm sure I will hear different opinions though. So the site is not up yet but I found out that Godaddy will Not store customers cc info , they will also not allow free shipping incentives based on how much the customers are spending, its got to be set per item either a set price or based on percentage. So I am realizing that its going to be pretty cookie cutter like. So my idea is how them build it and then have 3rd party come in and make it as much like Amazon as possible with all the add-ons. The next phase within a couple of weeks I would like to start marketing to get traffic to the site.

  • So your first issue was using Go daddy's website service.

Second mistake was paying $1529 for it.

But maybe those should be reversed.

I'd change hosts - build the site on Wordpress or something that can be customizable and create a magical experience for your users.

I am going to agree, going with Godaddy is a no no. Great for domain names but I wouldn't host or have them build a website for you. There are plenty of platforms that will do what you want and give you more functionality than what Godaddy can do. Is there a particular reason why you need to store credit cards? Is it for recurring orders? It is hard for me to give you a lot of advice until I know what you need but if you need to store credit cards and want all the functionality, go check out Americommerce (I have a link to the reviews in my sig). They have made changes to make it easier since my review but it is probably the most full featured hosted cart I have used but not as easy as some of the other ones. This includes:

    Multi-Vendor/Multi-Warehouse
    Recurring Orders/Storing Credit Cards
    Multiple coupons, discounts

Less than $100/month for a ton of products, responsive themes and lots of flexibility to do it yourself or have someone implement it for you.

Unfortunately, this is what GoDaddy does, charge you a lot of money for a half arced product that forces you to stay with them because you sunk a bunch of money in.

Before you do anything else, get a refund from Godaddy.

Then ask here, in the various forums and do some additional research and come up with a complete business plan before you start spending money.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

I would take RobinInTexas advice and seek a refund. It will be very hard to find a 3rd party to come in and do "add-ons" on the site like you want. Trying to duplicate Amazon is going to be costly. IMHO

When it comes to storing credit card data you need to remain PCI compliant at all times and that's a lot to ask of your shopping cart platform provider. I don't use a hosted solution, but I'd be surprised if any did and even if they did... Good luck getting that data moved to another solution.

Now, if you're using something like Braintree's Vault or Authorize.net's CIM that's an entirely different story.

P.S. Amazon is a billion dollar company that hires as much great talent as they can... To just think you're going to emulate it with plugins is a little naive...

There's a metric ton going on behind the scenes.

There are a couple hosted carts that are PCI compliant that store card numbers. They are the ones that allow for recurring or subscription based orders. Americommerce is an example.

I've been reading about GoDaddy and did purchase a domain name and shopping cart thru them. It is way too complicated for me, novice techy here. I paid for two years, can I ask for a refund and start somewhere else??

This is all very simple, small business works on 1-2:1 revenue:effort, mid-size 3-5:1, large enterprise 7-10:1. So 95% of the advice will be small business and the odd few will have mid-size - that will be the feeling you have. So it's not complex to dropship but the hard part is bringing all the pieces together - GoDaddy for anything is not a good idea if you want to compete at the top.

As far as Credit cards go, please drop me a note and I can get you a great rate. I work with a large wholesaler and have found very few that can beat his price and service. Next day money in bank and low rates less than 2% on most cards.
Let me help you if I can.

Just a few points, I have had good experience using Wordpress and would recommend that. I don't find that domain names are valued as highly these days. People are more focused on the actual website content and product.

Amazon repricing software that helps you win the Buy Box more often. eBay repricing also available.
