Advice on offering web design in exchange for percentage of sales

I recently had a request to design an ecommerce website at no cost and the person would offer me a percentage of sales. I contacted him and asked if he had a marketing plan, a monthly marketing budget and social network connections. His reply was "I send the products, ship them and you do the rest including marketing the website I design". I was fairly pissed off. I thought maybe he would come back with a power plan and also let me know his background in sales and marketing since I would be the web designer.

Anyway is there a website where I can list what I do in exchange for a percentage of sales and get a better deal?

I see there is a jv partner section here on warriorforum but it's hard to get a post on it.

I call that working for free. I wouldn't touch it.

  • You're going to be doing a lot of crap works for very little return. Most people who start their 1st e-commerce website have no idea how much marketing and hustling they need to do to even make their first sale.

purpleswizzleswirl is exactly right! You really have to work very hard on the Marketing end, also in learning the "trade" as well as being very dedicated and focused. If you're not you won't have much, if any success.

If your potential customers are looking to build their sites for free, what approach will they take to the really hard work of driving paying customers to their store. Don't work for free—you're undervaluing your own skills and you're telling people just that. Even sincere people will make unrealistic assumptions about future sales and that side of the job will be outside of your control.

It's tempting in the beginning to offer your services against future sales to get the work, but honestly, it works in very few cases. Value your time and expertise—if you openly do that then why would prospective customers do it?

I have done this in the past but it was a base + percentage of sales. You did right in asking to see the entire plan. I agree with the above poster that if they are not financially into the site at all then they really have no reason to promote it.

The only reason that I did this with my client is that I knew they would work on their side just as well as I would on mine to make sure that sales were coming in. We also had a solid contract in place that listed what they could and could not due, and the financial penalties for them if they did not uphold their end of the deal. This way, I was sure that they would always work to promote their business and make sure we could both make money.

Tell him to rent you a warehouse space, fill it with product, and you'll pay him a commission when the product sells.

You're doing all the work and taking the risk - he only has to do work when you make his sales! and for that he gives you a percentage of sales (affiliate?)

Doing work for a percentage of sales is fine if you can guarantee they are going to be working hard on the project and have experience. Otherwise as others have said stay clear
