[Tip] Selling Online? Don't Forget About the SSL Cost

If you are planning on opening up a drop-shipping site and plan on accepting credit card payments, make sure you factor in the cost of an SSL and anything associated (install, dedicated IP, etc).

I noticed a few posts on here with people breaking down their budgets and while it's a small cost ($10/year for basic SSL) it's still a cost you should factor in.

I personally made this mistake on my first drop-ship website I created a few months ago. Little did I know that a SSL required a dedicated IP address, and since I don't own a dedicated server I also had to pay HostGator $10 to install it on their backend for me.

Great advice Josh. However, I think with the $10 SSL you will get the "SSL Certificate Not Trusted Error"

This won't happen if you use an expensive SSL certificate. The $10 certificate will be good to start with tho.
    Thank you.

That would depend on what SSL you purchase. Most SSL's range in price from $10 per year up to $100 per year, and higher if you have a huge store. I have never see any "Not Trusted" errors unless you're working with an unknown company.

For those starting off in the niche a basic RapidSSL ($10/year) will work just fine. I have a few small stores that only get 3-5 sales per week (drop-shipping) and they work just fine.

I often recommend HostGator's Business plan for starting out. It includes private SSL and a free toll-free number. Not bad! And no, I don't work for them, but I'm a client. :-)

Doesn't the SSL only work on a single domain though? Or would all add-on domains have SSL enabled?

There are different types of SSL certificates. You can get the Multi domain SSL certificates and secure all your websites and addon domains using a single certificate.
You can get a Wildcard SSL to secure all the sub domains of a particular domain using a single certificate.

I was specifically referring to the HG Business Plan and the SSL they offer, with hosting, for only $11 per month. I am fully aware of the existence of multi-domain SSL's.

Highly doubt it. It's probably a standard domain SSL for a single FQDN.

Most of the SSL certs for that price are going to be from either partners or resellers. The reseller/partner has to either sell a certain amount of certs or deposit a decent sum of money to get those prices. It also depends what tier the seller is at as well. The price is also dependent on how long you purchase it for. Usually the lowest price advertised is priced for when your purchase for 2-3+ years.

Some SSLs cost over $50 per year, but it's nice to know you can get them as low as $10. I think Dreamhost has 'em for as low as $15 per year.

Also remember that you need to have a dedicated ip address for your ssl cert. Other wise if you are using the same shared ip address your host has likely used for hundreds of others than you and your customers will get errors when first accessing your site requesting them to approve a security request and this day and age people bounce way quick when they see stuff like that. Good Luck. Godaddy will have single domain ssl cert's for $5.99 on promos just search google.

This isn't entirely true anymore. A dedicated IP isn't required anymore with the use of SNI. Even so, an IP address isn't going to make anthything more secure. The site will only be as secure as the weakest link...usually the site itself.
