Hi everyone, I am self taught with about 1 year experience in ecommerce. It wasn't till I started a website that I used a CSV file for the first time. I am now having trouble understanding the relationships between our two sales channels (ebay & the website) and I am thinking I should learn how to use Access or some database tool. My question is what skills/tools have you found necessary to run your ecommerce operation?

CSV is just a normal excel file saved in that format, it means comma separated values. I have never needed more than just the basics when it comes to using Excel, no need for any database tools.

Most sites allow bulk import/export so it's just a matter of reworking your existing CSV files to work for that site.

Stick with Excel, it works fine as a database tool for what you are doing. Spend your time learning something useful, Access will just give you a headache.

I only use Excel for editing CSVs... I know a lot of people who had trouble using free alternatives like OpenOffice because it distorts the data.

What eCommerce platform are you using?

If you're on a big one like Shopify or BigCommerce you should be able to get an app that will "push" your products to eBay if that's what you're looking to do..

Currently I am running my site on Bigcommerce. I use the automatically generated xml feed file for Google PLAs. I would like to expand my advertising into Bing product ads and dynamic product advertisements. I am also planning to have my site rebuilt on Magento next year.

What skills would be usefull in running a larger ecommerce operation?
