A good business should be a bit boring?

I recently published an interview with Australian eBay seller Neil Waterhouse. One thing he said is "A good business should be a bit boring. It's a procedures manual."

Any opinions on that? Do businesses need to be exciting to keep managers and workers engaged? Or is a boring business a good sign, indicating that it follows a sensible business model?

    Broadly speaking, yes, successful - i.e enduring or lasting businesses - are boring. Pretty much every company starts out exciting e.g it's small, moves quickly etc etc and as it becomes larger, it becomes less interesting.

    We're seeing this with all of the 90's Tech companies e.g Ebay, Google and now in some respects Facebook. Why this is the case? They must become boring as they're answerable to shareholders would be my guess but there's probably a bunch of other reasons.

    You wrote a very good piece... and he's right... I once heard T. Harv Eker say that most people will never get rich because they get bored repeating the same thing over and over. Give people a simple system that works and the first thing most will want to do is reinvent the wheel... kinda like Freelancer.com pondering making all kinds of tweaks to this forum....
