How to Buy and Resell For Amazon Profit?

I just got started selling on Ebay and Craigslist and made my first 4 sales on the internet. Now I want to see if I can sell items on Amazon.

I go to garage sales and thrift stores to find products to sell on Ebay, but...

How do I find out whether an item is sellable on Amazon or not?

How much competition is too much - when looking at how many sellers are selling the same item?

There really isn't a surecut way to get selling data on Amazon like you can on eBay, but there are some criteria I like to follow that might help you get started.

    - Less than 50 other people have to be selling the same item
    - The Amazon sales rank has to be less than 1,000,000
    - The item has to make me a minimum profit of $3

Now, this criteria is what I set for me. You may want to alter your criteria based on your own vision and goals. I prefer items that will flip quickly and bring a good profit margin - A balance between the two.

Amazon sales rank below 1,000,000 generally shows a decent selling item. The lower the rank the better, BUT BEWARE, do not go buy this number alone, because it can be misleading. You need to form your own criteria, and unfortunately, Amazon requires us to do more thorough research than eBay does.

I would agree with those numbers in general. Except that I don't really look at how many people are selling the same book. If the book is ranked well (say under 100,000) and I can price it at the lowest or close to lowest price the I don't care how many people are selling it. Mine will most likely sell first. It's really all about the competition at the lowest price. If you have 10 Goodwills selling the same book then they will auto re-price their books down to 1 cent very quickly. You don't want to have to compete with that. Still, if the book is ranked well and the 10 Goodwills are at 1 cent while the 11th book is at $15 then I would list mine at $14.49 and wait. It just depends on how much space you have for inventory and how quickly you want to sell things.

Good thread. I am also confused about amazon sales rank. The products I want to sell have sales rank like this
    345675 in clothing.
    58765 in clothing.
    265438 in clothing.
33456 in sports and out doors.
Is this a good sales rank in the categories?
    Thanks.

Check out Resale Renegade on Youtube. He may provide you with some good tips to hit the ground running in your niche area. He is also a picker and makes money on both Youtube and Amazon. He uses an app called Profit Bandit that you may want to check out as well. Another good source of information is a guy named Raiken Profit on Youtube. If anything these guys might provide you with motivation. I don't have experience in this venture so that's all I got!
