Hi Warriors,

I plan to set up an online shopping website. I don’t want to use the templates of ecommerce platforms. I have someone design web pages for me, but I want to use the payment, shipping system or some tools on the platform, such as Magento, Zen Cart, Big Commerce… Are there any methods to plug these functions to my website?

Also I noticed users can add CSS, JS, HTML in "Magento Go", is it flexible to achieve any design as I expect? For example, I want to add a button called “Email me if arrives” when a product is out of stock, then website will email to all customers who clicked this button with the new product’s link when product arrives. Which is the best way to set up my website? Should I use the "Magento Go" or "Magento Community"? I may have more than 400 items of products.

Thank you in advance,
Rachel

    Regarding Magento Go vs Community I would select Community especially if you need to add extensions which it sounds like you do.

    Just get a good Magneto hosting company (like nexcess.com) and it will be similar to using Magento Go.

    Regarding "Out of Stock Notifications" there are several Magento extensions available to do this. Here is 1:

    As far as your other questions I am not sure what you are asking. I would use a premade template like one of these:

      Magento go is going to shut down soon. Go for community edition. I can further help you in development and design , if you need.

  • I was just about to respond with the same news about Magento Go! Community is a great alterative though (especially if you have someone to build out your site for you). I believe OpenCart is another open sourced ecommerce site as well.

    Good luck!

      SO based on what you are saying, you have your designer create straight HTML/CSS based pages to look exactly how you want. I am assuming you are not using a content management system.

      Designing on the carts is much hard since you have to interact with the shopping cart script which throws in a lot more complication. It is the same reason designing an HTML website is easier than designing a theme or template for a CMS.

      Now, you can, theoretically go that route if you want to, design a flat website and add shopping cart features but it is not something I really suggest. You will then be maintaining 2 such systems but, if it is something you want to do, check out Americart which will allow your designer to embed "products" into your website. Its based off Americommerce so while a bit of a learning curve is a powerful cart.

      Shopify also allows you to embed products from a shopify store into web pages but I have not used it yet so can't say any more about it.

      Finally, if you want a dynamic, easy to use shopping experience for your customers (highly suggested) look at a dedicated cart. Some are easier to customize than others, Shopify being the easiest.

      Or you can do the open source carts, get a nice premium theme for less than 80 dollars and work with the functionality they add. You just may not be able to work with your current web designer.

      As other shave said Magento Go is shutting down but none of us can really tell you what cart to use until you give us more information on what you are selling, how many products, skus, options, variants, etc.

      As far as ease of use (as well as out of the box functionality) IMO it goes:

      Opencart -> Prestashop -> Magento

      or

      Shopify -> Bigcommerce/Corecommerce -> 3dCart -> Americommerce

      Good luck!

    Magento community is better option as they have already announced to discontinue Magento Go.
    Handling 400 products will be a piece of cake for Magento. I suggest this because it is much more flexible then other platforms.

    Here is an Out of Stock Magento Extension that can help you to send automatic email on new stock arrival to the subscriber list.
