Magento Go Shutting Down

So for any of you thinking about using Magento Go, I just got notification they are shutting that platform down in 2015. This is gonna cause a lot of store owners a huge headache, glad I never put someone on Magento Go. I am quite shocked they decided to do this, they should have just done what Yahoo did, keep it going but don't do a ton of new updates. So much for "its owned by eBay" so it won't be shut down...

    This was pretty much expected since they laid off most of the Go division several months ago.

    I never really understood the appeal of Magento Go. For a hosted solution it had too much complexity without being able to customize it like regular Magento.

    Magento is partnering with Bigcommerce, an e-commerce technology platform vendor, to transition clients to its platform. “We chose Bigcommerce to help with the transition because of their shared commitment to client success and their proven track record of migrating large groups of merchants onto their platform,” says Mark Lavelle, senior vice president of product and strategy, eBay Enterprise. “Throughout this transition period, we will fully support both ProStores and Go, and clients will receive the same level of customer service they’ve come to expect.”

    Caveat Emperor:

    Beware of the "migration" that Big Commerce does. They helped me move from Homestead last year, but didn't tell me about the fine print. "*White Glove Setup and store migration are included free of charge for
    Platinum and Enterprise plans. If you downgrade or cancel your plan
    within 6 months, you'll be charged a $625 fee to cover the costs."

    That's news. A big change like that always puts the store owners at risk. Data transfer, site migration, shopping cart compatibility - so many things are associated with a Ecommerce Platform like Magento.

    At least they announced it 6 months in advance.

    One reason I prefer to NOT use a hosted solution. If you own the software and have it installed, even if the company stops developing it, your store will not go away and you can take your time transitioning to something else.

    Agree with this. When folks ask how to get started in ecommerce, I always recommend a hosted solution - there's too many advantages to list but they are numerous for the person starting out (esp. if non technical)

    That being said, it's clear that while you assume less technical risk going hosted, you always risk a business risk like this if a service shuts down.

    It's also strange that Ebay seem quite happy to turn customers to a competing service like BigCommerce, even if they won't have a hosted commerce offering themselves now.

    Im sorry and some of you might not agree with me but since ebay took over Magento there will be some upsetting changes to may supporters of Magento. I can tell you that in soon Ebay will look for a way to make money of the community version. Community version is one step away from GO! I remember when there was no enterprise edition and it was just community/Beta!

    Ebay will not be satisfied just with Enterprise and big commerce. They will want a piece of everything just like the other guys.

    But I got to say Magento is my favorite build!

      Magento already makes big $$$ from Magneto CE. However its not from licensing fees.

        Please do tell. I am assuming it is sales of themes, modules and plugins and affiliate fees for Magento hosting and others.

        The smart thing is they actually put Magento under PayPal instead of eBay so it will actually get some attention...

          Yeah, it was a real surprise for merchants and must say replatforming is number one priority today. BigCommerce has signed a deal with eBay to move all existing Magento Go clients across to their platform. It seems to be a nice solution but not for everyone. I believe thousands of Magento Go users probably would like to stay with Magento and a great amount of them will decide to migrate to Magento Community edition. As I can see cart2cart has already announced a possibility to migrate to over 50 ecommerce platforms (Bigcommerce as well as Magento CE are in the list of supported carts)
          As it is officially mentioned Magento Go is going to be closed on February 1, 2015 so that stores won't be affected during the Holiday shopping season. Nonetheless, I think merchants shall move before Christmas. Probably it will be better to do that during summer holiday season, when business activity level decreases.

          First of all Magento Community Edition (free) and Magento Enterprise share much of the same code so its not that expensive to develop Magento Community.

          Second, many smaller companies start with Community Edition because its free. Then as they grow it makes sens to upgrade to the paid version with full support. So for very little expense, Community Edition provides a constant source of new paid customers.

          Regarding revenue, the is a very large industry supplying 3rd part extensions, themes, hosting, consulting etc. for Magento CE. Many of these vendors pay a fee to become "approved" by Magento. There are different levels of endorcement (Gold, Silver etc.) and its a big revenue stream for Magento.

          Magento also puts on large conventions. There was just a major event in Vegas about 6 weeks ago. The vendors and attendees pay quite a lot to be involved.

    If BigCommerce is migrating all the Magento Go clients over, I do hope they fix the absolutely absurd eBay sync they have. Currently if you add a product to BigCommerce and send the listing to eBay only the first photo of your item gets transferred. It's been that way for years.

    People who sell used products, like myself, NEED it to send more than one photo or no one's going to buy the product. People want to see the actual condition of the item they're purchasing and one photo just doesn't do that. Many product vendors that sell new would also like more than one photo.

    The decision was made to migrate MagentoGo and Prostores to Bigcommerce because Bigcommerce structured a deal to make them the preferred migration platform. They are not guaranteed to land all the customers that were on Magento Go and Prostores.

    Shopify and AmeriCommerce are both able to do the migration just as easily. Both are advertising special deals. Explore your options. If you are a MagentoGo or Prostores customer, take a shopify or americommerce 14 day trial and see how the backend looks. You can do the same with BigCommerce before deciding to make the switch.

    Don't worry guys you can easily migrate your Magento Go site to Magento CE (Community Edition).
    And the good thing is it's 100% free and can extends tons of new features and customization's,
    All you need to worry about is a Magento optimized hosting, which will cost start from $20 onwards depend upon your SKUs counts.
    And the very good thing about is there is no SKU limitations unlike Magento Go and You don't even need to learn new eCommerce platform.

      I have a few clients that I am migrating from GO to CE. Heres the data transfer steps. And Yes, It is this easy.

      Request a store dump from MGO support. They will provide you with a dump of all your images, css files, media folders etc on your MGO store.

      Export your products from your MGO store. Remove the below attributes in your MGO export csv files as they are invalid on CE.

      "_additional_image",
      "_additional_image_label",
      "_giftcard_amounts_website",
      "_giftcard_amounts_amount"

      Rebuild your attributes/sets and category structures on CE. Import the MGO export files into CE. Granted this only works with simple products you will need to manually rebuild the bundled, grouped and configurables unless your using Magmi or some other import add-on.

      Couple of quirks now. Multiselect attributes are single line in MGO and it exports them this way. The Magento import feature is "suppose" to support single line multiselect import strings but it doesnt. A way around it? Remove the multiselect attributes from your MGO export file. Import the products as normal. Make a sep import file with just the SKU and the single row multiselect attributes. Go to Data profiles > Import All products and Data Profiles will import single line multiselect attributes. So no need to rebuild your import files with multiple rows on attributes. Its a little slow using DataProfiles but it works perfect.

      Migrating to CE is a hell of a lot easier than migrating to BigCommerce. Magento wont tell you this so I had to figure it out for myself. BigCommerce sucks when compared to CE. Think of your online store as an investment and do yourself a favor. Dont migrate to BigCommerce, It will eventually meet the same fate as MGO.

      There is no need to pay someone hundreds or thousands of dollars to migrate your data. It took me a couple days to figure all this out as it was not documented any where on the internet so props to me for making my research public, right? =-p

      Seems like Magento would have this documented for MGO store owners but alas they dont. They want you to migrate to BigCommerce.

      Worried about PCI compliance on CE? Dont be. Nexcess Hosting SIP plans are setup to be PCI compliant out of the box.

        newrykillz, I'm having the same issues importing products from GO into CE, how did you remove the attributes

        from your exported csv? I've deleted the columns in various editors but still get errors saying the file is invalid when I import to CE
