Hi Everyone,

first post here, looks like a great forum.

I've built myself a machine called a cnc plasma cutting table. It's used for automated profile cutting of metal sheets. I'm looking at selling both fixed design and custom designed products. These are sheet metal goods so are not exactly light weight. I'm in Melbourne, Australia and can see me using couriers to get these items to the customers. I don't envisage any overseas orders LOL.

As an internet marketing beginner, my thoughts are along these lines. Please feel free to shoot me down and tell me I have it all wrong, I'm here to learn.

Despite the fees, I'm guessing Ebay should be a good way to start and to sell fixed products at "buy it now" prices. Plus the market is already there and set up, and it's a good channel to make some initial sales.

I'm also going to need my own e-commerce store. I've been looking into Shopify but don't know if the quantity of variants is enough in the cart area. I need my customers to be able to choose several different fields like size, colour, material, thickness, etc, then the price is calculated based on those variables. Then there needs to be capability for them to enter their custom text and font. The more I can automate this "custom" process the better.

The next level is full customisation where I take a bit of this, a bit of that, and stick it all together to give a finished image. This is where my next though comes to mind.

I've used Xsitepro in the past. I'm wondering how practical / impractical it is to have another website made with this software. It's purpose will be to show LOTS (hundreds) of examples of what is possible with my services. In this industry a common saying is the customer doesn't know what he/she wants until they see it. So I'm wanting a link from my e-commerce site (like Shopify) to my image display site (Xsitepro). Am I thinking along the right lines here ? I know Xsitepro is now dead (and Paul Smithson has even closed the forum !!) but is there any downside to using it to build a static site for the said purpose.

Cheers,

Keith.

Cool machine. EBay is a good option . You may also try amazon. I see a lot of people selling stuff they made on 3d printers and other stuff they have personally made. It may take time to get approved but it will pay off in the end

        Thanks guys.

Yeah it's been a long journey learning about everything. After the mechanics, etc, there's the software side of thing, understanding how to get good cut quality, and other stuff. I think it will hurt if someone thinks everything is done for you and you just press a button to get the cut piece LOL.

I did some research on Ebay yesterday and results so far are dissapointing. Very few sales of items along the lines of what I'd sell as a fixed product. The impression I get so far is that Ebay is full of price shoppers. Might make a sale here and there but it looks like it will be hard to compete with all the Chinese and tinny metal "make do" items that seem to sell much better.

I love the thought of leverage with fixed products but I bet that won't be that easy. Customised cuts may be the strength in this game. Then I've got to deal with all those who think the design / artwork time is free, yet it's actually the biggest part of the job.

          Hey Keith,
CNC plasma cutting is really cool, and definitely something I'd love to have.
How thick are the sheets that your machine can cut?
How big cuts do you envision doing?
          What metals do you cut?

My advice is to set up a store in wordpress with woocommerce. That's what I did, and it's really easy to get everything set up. Putting time and effort into your own site is like buying your own house instead of renting it. With love and care you might at least end up with something that you can sell or restructure if the ecommerce bit is not working out.

Wordpress + woocommerce is very flexible, there are millions of free plugins to get the site customized. And with a lot of good guides online, so you should be able to set something up pretty quickly.

          Best of luck!

            Hi Fiscot,

thanks for that info, I'll look into that.

Table has a total cutting area of 2.4 metres x 1.5 metres. Thickest I've cut so far was 16mm but the machine can go a touch more. Pretty much any conductive metal can be cut but the main materials are generally steel, stainless and aluminium.

WooCommerce is a good option, absolutely.

BigCommerce and 3dCart should be able to meet your requirements, look really nice right out of the box, so to speak. You don't have to do a ton of work to get things looking and feeling the way you want them to, and they have some very modern, mobile-responsive themes that are incredibly easy to install.

    Hope this helps!

    Hey there..

    Congrats for your venture!

You could try Amazon besides eBay. You could give a shot to sites like uBid, Bonanza and Etsy.

Your own store would be great, make it a point to promote it like crazy.

    Regards
