Ahh! product can't predict, but women are more interested to shop online so you should have to look products related to women. As well, electronics are also a best option in Indian.

Right time to think about opening an e-commerce store, especially when India experienced a drastic 128% growth in interest from the consumers in 2011-12, compared to only 40% growth in 2010-11 (source 1) and according to I-Cube 2013 report (source 2), by 2014, India will have 243 million internet users, which is estimated as a surpassing number of internet users in USA.

Now, talking about the niches that sell best in India ... well, it could be categorized like that - however, it's a growing industry, what you find not selling much now, there is no certainty that it won't be in next 6 months or 1 year (for example, pet products).

A graphic says better, so here it is:

    Hope this helps.

I am from India as well & I am also thinking to start e-commerce website. However I am confused. Amazon recently started fulfillment service so I am not sure what to do. I mean should I sell on amazon or have my own e-commerce website. Further I am also thinking to import goods from china but not sure . . .

If you ask me, I always vote for having own website. You can call it my personal preference though. Amazon has ready traffic, but I'd personally like to grow myself as a brand at the first place. If you consider dropshipping, well you can check this thread

Lots of goodies are waiting there!

      Good luck!

      Hey Himanshu..
I agree with you that amazon is reputed one in india but it doesn't mean that we don't have to start our own...we just have to think outside the box :-)

Thank you for your help qowb. But don't you think drop-shipping is risky in India? First of all time for transit. Secondarily clearing customs in india is big pain.

You're right Himanshu. In fact, I am running some niche stores as an affiliate and planning to move on by having my own e-commerce website and for this doing a hell lot of research these days.

My findings suggest that you still cannot find any credible source of Indian dropshippers (I am still searching). The big retail stores are basically operating in agreement with distributors, wholesales, etc. So, yes, Indian market in context to dropshipping (internal) is pretty much unorganized yet and for external, your points are right, both transit time and customs clearance could be a real pain.

Is there anything that really makes you surprised? Yes, running niche store as an affiliate in India ... mostly Amazon stores, but from some other networks too. Why? Any problem in doing that?

I am planning to buy goods in bulk from china & sell hear in India via amazon fulfillment. The best part is you don't need a warehouse or contract with courier company to handle shipping. Many people in west do this for living (and some of them are millionaire). I found this website very useful.

There are few problem with starting your own e-commerce in India.

        1) Most of the people think online buying is not safe. Convening people for this requires brand building & lot's of advertisement. (Not just online)

        2) COD. Same problem as above. people are afraid to take out there credit/debit card for online shopping. (Even big guys like flipkart / amazon / HS18 have same problem & hence more then 80% of there sale is done via COD)

        3) How will you beat the shipping cost if you compare it to big guys. (Indian mentality = "buy cheapest").

        4) Unsold inventory. Big guyes have lot's of money for inventory (from VC). They don't care if there is unsold inventory. They will scrap it.

There are few other probables as well but above four comes first in my mind first.

@Himanshu1988 In my PM reply to yours I promised to answer this post.

First, regarding the site your link takes us to, it is so far removed from my style that you should consider whether you want my book's matter of fact, practical, no-nonsense style or one that appeals to everyone's desire to quickly become a millionaire.

Regarding your points 1 and 2, I know they are problems but I see only a very gradual change over a very long time, so as you obviously know, you have to learn to live with that, and I agree that Amazon would be better for you than your own eCommerce site.

          3. You can compete with the big guys. There are two ways to do this. The first is quick, the second will take time. First you buy direct from manufacturers in China - not from the countless traders masquerading as manufacturers on the popular sourcing sites. Your buying prices will amaze you. Second, you satisfy your customers by giving them competitive prices without cutting corners on quality.

          4. You can buy small quantities and don't have to carry big inventory. Don't be worried about the big MOQs that are always quoted. I teach how to get around that problem.
