Facts About Big Brand Imports

A recent post by a newbie showed that there is some misunderstanding about buying, importing, and reselling trademarked or big brand name goods, so I decided to provide some detailed information.

If you find any suppliers in China that do offer well-known brands for sale, you should run the other way. Most big brand goods being offered are counterfeits, but even if they are genuine, the problems are much the same.
  • Suppliers of counterfeit products are notorious for scamming. Often, buyers of counterfeits pay and then receive nothing. Other times they get a product that will work for a very short time, and sometimes, if it is electronics, they even get an empty shell.
  • Customs will usually confiscate the branded goods (genuine or counterfeit) on arrival. There goes your hard earned cash.
  • Depending on the quantity and value, Customs may prosecute, with the possibility of heavy fines and/or imprisonment.
  • Once you are detected importing counterfeits, your name and address will be flagged by Customs. This means every shipment ever after will be delayed while they do a thorough inspection.
  • No warranty, regardless of what the supplier might say, so you carry the cost of replacements when your customers discover how shoddy the products are.
  • There have been numerous cases of the brand owners suing and getting such big compensation payments that the illegal importer is bankrupted.
All this means that unless you are willing to sell branded items purchased at high prices (giving you very low margins) from authorized local distributors, you should consider importing generic products, but all is not lost. You can private label almost any product and you don't need to buy large quantities to do this.

A final word of warning: If a product looks like a big brand item it can cause importers the same problems as listed above. Even without the brand, they can be classed as knockoffs because they are infringing the trademark, copyright, or registered design owner's intellectual property rights.

    Hi sir firstly i would like to say thanks for the offer that you gave me i appreciate it. Secondly i was wondering would you be able in the future to turn your books into video content and provide it inside PAC by Jim Cockrum?. I am more visual learning person, but i still enjoy your book very much.

    Finally i had some un relate question when you talking about PL are you able to add any or sort of modification or add functionality to it?. If it something that you can digest will you be able to alter the taste or flavor to it?. Or Private Label means you strictly or limited to put your own brand and no modification would be allow?

      The problem I see with video presentations is that they take so much time to follow through in the learning process that they would slow you down.
      I have taken care to use simple language and not add unnecessary words in my book. Another Warrior posted this recently: I purchased his book last week, it's an awesome book! Straight to the point.. And didn't have to waste my time reading many worthless pages!!

      Regarding your question about private labeling, there is no limitation other than possible extra cost, for you to make changes to a product when you want to sell under your own brand.
