Tools For Selecting Products?

Hi all,

Im quite a technically minded person and like to try and get systems in place.

When it comes to picking products to sell a lot of the advice is "what are you interested in?" I've been in business for a while and what im interested in doesnt really have much relevance to what sells, it makes it a little more interesting to work on it, but in business you have to go where the money is.

So first things to consider are the practicalities of shipping, if you are going to get nailed on the shipping costs then its a no go. If its a products that people like to touch before they buy its a no go, such as perishables likes fruit and veg etc.. well at least thats what I thought although these days i'm seeing more and more food stuffs being sold online, hats off to the innovators.

But its still flying by the seat of your pants trying to find a products to sell. I am not talking about selling existing products necessarily, such as xboxes or branded clothes etc, purely because the big sellers are going to get far better pricing and price you out the market.

But assuming all those filters are considered does anyone know of any software or websites or software that might help you decide what is a good product to sell?

Ive never been sure what to make of keyword searches, huge search volume usually goes with lots of competition, low competition usually goes with poor demand. Neither seems a great situation but just wanted to put my opinions out there and see if anyone has any other "filters" they check before going for a product. Or useful tools they use?

Thanks

Thanks for that. It's a good post.

I have time. Money and experience in business (although not running an ecommerce site) and am moving in to that field. I have contacts in the pr world as well so ideally looking to produce my own range of 'x'. Really don't mind what it is. From apparel, to technology and build a brand. That's what excites me. But at the moment I am trying to find what data I need to look at to try and give me clues if it's a viable market.

You can use product filtering features to choose a product from thousands of products in the eCommerce website.
