No; it isn't normal at all.

But nobody can possibly tell you reliably why that happened to you, let alone how to correct it, without seeing everything you're doing, knowing where the traffic came from, what you sent them immediately in exchange for their email addresses, and so on. (I suspect your traffic may be crap, myself, but that's no more than a wild and uninformed guess on the basis of some other threads in which you've posted.)

These two threads may help you ...

I'd say that this was completely normal ... if you're using Adf.ly traffic.

As Alexa says, without seeing your squeeze page, what your offer was, where your traffic came from, and your email, it's pretty much impossible to pinpoint the cause.

I've never done a WSO (free or paid) and have no plans to.

But why would anyone else's open-rates from a list built by doing a free WSO have much to do with your open-rate from a list built by doing a free WSO, anyway? I see that it's true that they'd be "IM-niche" and that they'd also be subscribers on huge numbers of other marketers' lists, and I see that those are both factors that hugely worsen average open-rates, of course, but the open-rate you get from a free WSO is still going to depend on the content of the free WSO, and especially on the content of your first couple of emails to your list.

When you give something away free (i.e. in exchange for the opt-in) it's essential that whatever you give away serves all these purposes. That's going to be true for a free WSO in the Warrior Forum just like it's true for a free report offered on a website.

The extent to which it does actually serve all those purposes will be, by far, the single biggest factor affecting your open-rates for the subsequent email series you send out.

Call me an interfering busybody, but my concern for you is that in setting out in IM-related niches, you've copied the single commonest mistake made by beginning marketers and the single biggest reason for their failures. The one thing of which you're making certain, this way, is that you're competing for the same traffic with some of the world's most experienced, most successful, best-funded and most professional marketers. Whom do you think the odds favor, to make money from that situation???

My freebie lists get around a 10-15% open rate which isn't bad but it could be better. I know the industry standard is around a 10% open rate so try to aim for that as a minimum.

My buyer lists always blow my freebie lists OUT OF THE WATER, and I consistently get 50-70% open rates with them.

Takeaway: Freebie lists are good but a list of buyers will always be more responsive.

Average open rate is 10-15% it just totally depends on your niche and how you are marketing to them. If you are just hammering you list with offers and not helping them your open rate as well as your unsubscribe rate is going to be really low. If your help you list and send them good information they will continue to open and read your emails.
