E Mail Marketing - What Worked then
In 1996 I started one of the 1st email marketing firms online - Opt-Email.com Prospective advertisers didn't know
what email marketing was, so we had to 'educate' them in order to get their business. One of the 1st things we found out is you gotta give recipients something free in order to get them interested in your client's pitch. That still applies today. I used to tell advertisers: "We can get 100% response!" They of course would say - "No way!" - "It's easy - just offer a $100 bill to anyone who responds." I was making the point that good response was possible if the recipient received something of value free. For instance: We had a client who made 'boutique' (and expensive) dog food. We got the list of several dog-related 'Ezines' (blogs today), and sent them a pitch for our client's dog food, with this freebie - 'Click here for a list of ways to help your dog in case he gets injured." That page also included a form for a discounted bag of dog food and 'Free shipping for the next 2 days" It was a successful campaign, and proved again that sales is a process.
