Getting started with list building

hello! new bie here!

Been in the freelance game for quite some time, some cheap ppc work here and there with some limited success. I'm hoping on getting a start on SEO and list building, but more on list building.

I would like to know how much would it usually cost to get started in making a list including everything like costs in a service like aweber for example and do you really need a website when you do list building?

Can't I market products directly on the list like for example, grab an offer in maxbounty or clickbank and tell my subscribers about it directly?

anything that is of help, thanks!

    Hi Tessie!

Welcome to the world of list building

I don't have much background in SEO but I do have a couple lists over 10k.

To answer you questions, it isn't necessary to have a website, but it is necessary to have an opt-in page or squeeze page. You could use a service to create an opt-in page like Leadpages where they host the page on their own servers but they do charge a monthly subscription. You would want to create an opt-in page where you give away a free gift or lead magnet that attracts a certain type of customer and then put them into your autoresponder series(aWeber, GetResponse, etc.). From there you can promote different products to them off of clickbank, maxbounty, etc. as well as send them valuable content so you can build a relationship with the list over time. I have found this to be the easiest way to get started to build a good list that creates a good ROI.

So the starting costs would be about $15/month for the autoresponder when you have a list under 1000(of course this cost will go up as you build a larger list), around $60/month for a opt-in page creator service if you want to be able to do split testing, or you can buy your own domain and hosting which would be around $100/year.

Of course you would also have any costs associated with traffic but that is a whole different story

So overall, a pretty low cost to get started.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi Tessie,

Great advice from Sean. Yes, costs are very inexpensive.

    More subscribers = More $$$

Get started with a GetResponse free trial, if GR seems too complicated you'll probably like Aweber (personal preference). Both are very good.

I would actually recommend a website. This is obviously my personal experience, however when I started building a list and delivering content/offers to subscribers...I had dismal results.

BUT, once I built a website and started to put my face out there more (and became more opinionated - very important) I noticed subscribers became much more responsive!

Also, there are a few different ways to build a list. Just a hint - look into methods that will build you a list of "buyers"

    Cost breakdown...(rough estimates)

    Domain - $9.99 /year
    Hosting - $7.99 /month
    Autoresponder - $19 /month

Total - Roughly $30.00 per month and that 9.99 domain a year. Pretty cheap.

With related costs, it can get expensive. Things like web design, graphics, writing etc.

Yes, you can do whatever with your list in terms of recommending things. Just keep it relevant.

Right now I am running less than $100 a month with all Costs.

Very moderate compared to most traditional businesses.

    Not necessarily, but ...

    (i) If you have a website (even if it's only a very small one) and effectively show it to people before you ask them for their email addresses, that can enhance your credibility very significantly and thereby enable you to build a far more responsive and valuable list than you'd have been able to build otherwise - the importance of this point, in long-term income terms, is very widely underappreciated, (particularly in the Warrior Forum!). And ...

(ii) In general, it's much better to have your own domain-name and hosting anyway (rather than depending on some other service to host "your" squeeze-page), and once you have that, you may as well have a little site anyway.

That depends on the terms and conditions of whatever you're promoting. For example, for an Amazon affiliate, the answer's "no", because Amazon affiliate links are not allowed in emails. (That doesn't, of course, mean that Amazon affiliates don't/shouldn't do email "marketing"!)

Again, appreciate that part of the significance of "having the site" doesn't relate just to "making the sales" but to the self-selection of the people willing to opt in, in the first place. If you have a website, different people opt in (and they may make much better customers: that's always been my experience, whenever I've tested this: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post7939758 ).

It's important not to look at list-building in quantitative terms.

It's an easy mistake to make.

Don't imagine that "the most income possible" is going to come from building "the biggest possible list" from the traffic you generate: that's very rarely the case (and there are good and valid and reliable reasons for that, too, which are going to apply to you just like they apply to all the rest of us ).

"Quality" is much more important than "quantity", and list-building is one of the most classic illustrations and evidence of it.

    This might help you: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ml#post6123982

You don't need web page (you can use some landing page services), but it helps to build funnel.
With high converting funnel your traffic costs will be played with earnings from your funnel

The highest cost in list building is investment into traffic....

But, you can make money while you building your list. You can build it for free in fact...
The "magic" is in funnel which need to convert and bring you money back while you build the list

First step is to make funnel which will bring you back the money you invest into the traffic.
You have more ways to build profitable funnel….god converting offer//product,
    CPA offer, affiliate offers...
When your funnel is able to bring you positive cash flow then the

second step is to drive traffic generate money and reinvest money back into the traffic
You need to drive paid traffic because it is fast and scalable…

I build two two big lists in fact for free. You only need some money to start traffic….
