Regaining Lost Email Sign-Ups

Hello! My names Harry, and I'm new here, driven out of desperation and curiosity. I'm a web dev hobbyist, and took on a side project to help someone with their emerging website. This particular person is a speaker and author, so building an email base is important to him. Of course, when his designer set up the page, the email submission box (which offered a free chapter of his book) was not set up correctly.

So for the first few months (and first few thousand visitors and presumably hundreds of email entries) later, I go in to help him, and discover, woe and behold, all those emails were lost. Several email tracers and phone calls with Microsoft later, it appears these emails are un-recoverable.

So my question to this community is, how do I attract the attention and regain said emails of these first few loyal and interested members? I appreciate any ideas brainstroming you have!

    In this case Harry you wouldn't. If things were not configured correctly, then they're gone and there's no point in wasting time looking into it. Your client will either need to reinvest and build that list again or do what he does best, and expect new leads to come in and work on helping them.

    This speaker / author doesn't keep a back-up of the content that he was sending out to people? I'm not entirely sure what Microsoft has to do anything. Was he using a reliable AR such as GR or Aweber to begin with? How was he managing the emails in the first place?

    I don't understand why someone would have outsourced something that important without having tested it before traffic was sent in the first place.

    So from my understanding there was a mistake when collecting information from potential subscribers and because of that you lost out on lots of potential clients is that it? If that's the case you may be better of just starting from scratch now that you have figured out the error(s) that were causing this problem. Unfortunately if you don't capture the visitors contact info the first time around , you may lose out on them forever. Just keep moving forward.

    The one thing every email marketer needs to do here before they set their website LIVE and paying for new visitors is to make sure that the opt in form is working.

    Then you need to sign up with a new email address and see if the emails are coming to your inbox. If they are not, you need to fix what ever problem there is.

    Once everything is working OK, then you can start to focus your attention on marketing.

      Depending on the host and the time frame, you may be able to mine some of the data from server logs.

      You may need to hire someone to do the mining, but IIRC, the form submission should have been recorded in the server log as a page request, with the email address as part of the url.

        Thank you so much for the advice.

        Just to clarify, I didnt set up the website to start off with. Unfortunately I cannot do any datamining (Squarespace is the host)

        Gotta keep moving forward! Plan on doing a free study guide type thing to re-secure any of those lost emails.
