Am I sending through Gmail or my web host?

Hi, I've been trying to set up my mailing software (ARPreach) with my Gmail account, I've tried using both SSL and TLS on ports 465 and 587 with no luck. Finally, the settings seemed to work correctly:

SMTP server: localhost
SMTP server port: 25
SMTP server user name: my gmail address
SMTP server password: my gmail pw
Encryption: None
Keep connection alive: checked.

As a novice, these settings seem to not use the Google SMTP servers, is that correct? If so, am I currently sending through my host's webmail?

  • You can only send a limited number using gmail after which you will be blocked. The same will apply using the limited resources of a shared hosting provider. Using their server fo bulk will likely get your IP address banned and all messages will be considered spam

You need to use a third party SMTP service like Amazon SES for high volume low cost. Ensure you clean your list regularly and don't over send to avoid complaints.

You may get more help if you explain exactly what you are trying to do? Do you have a large or small list? What niche? How many emails do you send etc?

  • Yes I know about Amazon SES and other mail servers, I was just investigating the possibility of using Gmail for small lists (say 100 emails sent per day per Gmail account), thanks.

    • If the message is exactly and the same, and is a marketing email, you will get blocked before it all even makes it out.

Furthermore, if you are sending tranactional types of email, then you should be fine.
  • As far as i know, you can send to gmail accounts via this smtp account only. and the number of emails sending is also limited,
