Slow Send Rate Using ArpReach + Hostgator (Dedicated Server)

Hello:

We are experiencing a very slow email send rate, despite having everything we need to send quickly.

We've got a dedicated server from Hostgator and an email list of around 200,000 subscribers. There are no imposed sending limitations on our server from Hostgator.

We are using ArpReach to manage our emails. We are using Cron to send our list ("Sendmail" option in Arp), as it is the only available option in ArpReach.

Our email broadcast is sending at a rate of 50 emails per every 5 minutes, which is obviously very slow. When we used Interspire, we did not have any issues, as it was able to send 5,000 emails per hour. Our "Inter Email Delay" is set to 0.

We've tried to contact ArpReach support for over a month, and they have not been helpful at all. We know that ArpReach is a known program around the Warrior Forum, so we decided to ask for help here.

ArpReach told us: "This is the first time I have ever heard of Sendmail being slow. A benchmark speed for Sendmail on unoptimized shared hosting is 10,000 per hour." However, as we mentioned, we have a dedicated server and we are still only able to send 600/hour.

Does anyone have any ideas or possible solutions to our problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You can test it with smtp service like amazon ses. And see if it improves your speed. If it does then you will know that there is a problem with your server.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know how much it would cost to test it with Amazon?

Are you seeing any packet loss off the IP your sending with?

Are you sure the network card is configured correctly?

Those are the three things that immediately come to mind.

Have you contacted hostgator about the problem?
      Thanks for the reply.

      To address your questions:

The bandwidth is definitely not the issue. As you said, we have a dedicated server with plenty of excess bandwidth.

How can we test to see if we are experiencing packet loss? Any help would be appreciated.

When you say network card, which one are you referring to? I was unsure as to how network cards related to the issue. Are you referring to our internet connectivity?

As for Hostgator, yes we have contacted them a handful of times. We've spoken to them via live chat as well as email. Their response was: We are more than willing to work with you in changes whatever parameters you need on the server, however tuning the server to work with the mail app you are using is outside the scope of what we can support.

Thanks in advance for any continued help!

I just went and did a little googling and there's a reoccurring problem with sendmail running slow and that is the hostname resolving.

        http://www.alphadevx.com/a/372-Fixin...P-via-Sendmail

Basically what it says is to make sure the only line in /etc/hosts file has the IP 127.0.0.1 and not your external IP address.

This is very interesting. We contacted ArpReach about the issue you presented us with, but they basically disregarded it.

However, they seem to be very unhelpful with things. So we are continuing to check this out, as I feel as if it makes perfect sense with our issue.

          Thanks again!

Did they set everything up for you on the server?

Did they give a reason for disregarding it?

Do you know how to login to the server and check it yourself?

              Thanks for your responses.

ArpReach installed their software for us, but they did not configure the server. We did that ourselves.

As for disregarding it, they basically said they are not responsible for server issues. They said something like, "If we fix it for you this time and something goes wrong again, where does it end?We cannot be responsible for server issues."

We know how to login to the server, but we are not entirely sure what to check. All we know is that our send rate is really slow, and our settings seem to be correct.

Please let me know if you have any other suggestions, and thanks again!

I use Amazon SES with a 3$ VPS and I can send 100,000 emails per day just fine. You should consider switching if you haven't already done so.

I will definitely check that out as another option if we can't end up figuring this out.

      Thanks!

Do you know what editor is on your machine?

At the prompt you simple enter:

    editor-name /etc/hosts

    For example:

    edit /etc/hosts
    pico /etc/hosts
    nano /etc/hosts
    etc...

If you need someone to do it for you, just PM me.

However, whoever you got the server from should have a tech that could do this for you.

Here are my thoughts... HostGator gets pretty good results but getting banned from them is very common even though there is no Email limit.

Personally, I prefer a HostGator VPS and use it to send emails very slow as the inbox rate is very good.

For larger and faster mailings, I use a different company.

I have over 300k on my VPS with no issues.

Use dedicated server with SSD driver... it will improve the speed.... Also to send more emails I would recommend PowerMTA to speedup email sending with better quality.... I am using it and also provide such setups to my clients and it sends very faster than normal speed...

I had a similar issue. I asked ARPReach and they gave me a reply like this:

"If the scheduled task notification seems to be stuck on “running”, log in to your server’s admin panel and go to your arpReach installation directory. In the schedule_logs directory check the most recent log files. It will give you an idea on where the hold up is.

Also, when logged in to your arpReach system, go to Help / About… / System, you'll see what memory allocated for your PHP is. It is possible that the memory is timing out before all the tasks due are finished. We recommend 256Mb, but you might need to set it higher if you have a large list and if you are planning on sending large files.

Ask your web host to increase the memory and the buffer for you. They need to know that the memory increase MUST be applied to both http PHP and php-cli which is used for cron tasks."

I know it's nothing to do with the rate of email sending but they ask me to check on PHP memory and checking the log files. So I thought maybe this could be a direction for you to check out.

Not sure if this is helpful. :p
