Hi everybody
I am new to all of this and hope some of the old hands can offer some honest advice and tips.
I have the opportunity to purchase a list of 120,000 UK online casino users all with email addresses, account balances etc. Price I have been quoted is £3K which seems very reasonable. The list is 10 months old and has not been used, essentially a friend of a friend who is a database expert was hired to compile the information for an Asian casino (he also has lists for Australia, numerous European Countries and other Asian countries) but it seems they tried to rip him off so he kept the information for himself and has thus far managed to sell on the Australian list and a couple of others.
My question really is do you feel there is an opportunity here? Or even though it is a 'niche' list that I would essentially be spamming people?

Can anybody offer a general idea of what (if anything) they would look to do to monetise such a list?
Or is it just a waste of time and money?

Any comments/help very gratefully received.

Cheers

I will give you a quick example.

If you have $1 million to buy a specific business, but you don't have the skills to manage it, then you will probably end up with nothing more than a business that is making little to nothing.

Same is with your list. Most people on email lists buy because of a relationship built previously.

So to answer your question, probably it isn't worth 3k. You can invest those money in building your own list and make much more than you could possibly make with the list you are thinking of buying.

Hope that this helps, but I haven't seen someone to sell a profitable email list yet.

    Regards

Here's a very recent thread which may help you, Cheese: http://www.warriorforum.com/email-ma...ml#post9331922

I see that £25 per thousand sounds cheap, if the list is exactly what it's described as, but there are still going to be some potentially very adverse legal, ethical and especially practical problems involved in trying to use it.

If it were legitimate and safe and practical to do so (all of which I very much doubt!), personally I would try to monetize it by providing an "online gambling newsletter" (which I would create for the purpose), interspersed with promotions for ClickBank-type gambling-related products (some of which do pay very substantial commissions). Casino sign-up CPA offers can also earn a bit.

    It Just. Doesn’t. Work.....

Whatever the reason, buying an email list seems like an easy and low cost way to grow your business but there are lot of serious consequences....

This is so caled "unsolicited bulk/commercial email." If the people you’re emailing did not directly sign up with your's page then it’s considered unsolicited....
The E-mail addresses on a purchased list are connected to real people who are not expecting any communication from you. They have no idea who you are...
Even if the list is full of real people, imagine how annoyed they will be when they receive your email completely out of the blue.

You also need to consider what software you would use to market to this list. I know when I worked for a casino affiliate we had the opportunity to get a list but we couldnt use aweber, get response etc because they didnt opt in to our list.

I called aweber and they told me that you couldnt promote to this list because it would violate their spamming policy.

We researched some emailing programs that would allow us to spam the list and found one based in China. In the end, we just dropped the idea and continued with other marketing methods.

He's right about the legal issue.
In order to make it a viable list for yourself. You need to have the owner send YOUR email with preferably your own opt-in option in there. This is so you can "steal" the emails legally. Otherwise, you're better off just paying the owner of the list to send your email/offer.
      Best of luck.

    Hi,

I agree with the other sentiments expressed so far. If you have 3 grand for somebody else's list, then spend it on growing your own. You will then know the source is good, the people on it will have started a relationship with you rather than having it dumped on them and (depending on how you have attracted them) you will also know the quality of the company you're keeping.

In the end though, it's your money and your choice.

I have to agree with everyone else here! Invest the 3K yourself and you'll get something much more valuable.

If your serious about buying, I would purchase a random sample or ask for it for free and test it. Also I am sure you can negotiate the price down. I have always found that list brokers that are a small company or one man shop will always take much less than the asking price. Personally the price seems rather high to me. However, if you don't already have a proven way to monitize it, you probably want to pass.

Buying list is hit and miss. There are some that have really burned me and there are others that have been gold mines. Most likely the person selling it will not get many offers. Offer them a much cheaper rate since it is old and will have about 10-20% bounces.

Also, keep in mind that it can be very difficult to inbox using words related to casino's. If not other reason, that would prevent me from doing it as it would always be a battle.

As for the comment about people being annoyed because they received an email from you... what a joke. I'm not expecting something from most people I get an email from. Don't like it, delete it. The only problem with sending emails to people that do not know you is they are more likely to click the Spam button which can get your email blocked or account shut down.
