my twist on the confirmation email

A couple of years ago I was struck at how many people waste the opportunity that is presented to them on the confirmation email (for double opt ins).

Nearly everyone I signed up to essentially said thanks for subscribing here's your link. At the time I was rereading Cialdini's Influence (for probably the 30th time) and the notion of commitment and consistency kept going around my mind.

I put together the following draft shortly afterwards

Hi,

Thanks for visitong (www.) and requesting more information on .......

in a moment I'll show you how to get (freebie name) so that you can (benefit) and stop (pain trigger). but first

i hope you remember that i made three commitments to you

to help you overcome (pain trigger)
and (benefit)
so you can (effect)

those are my pledges to you

i think its only fair to warn you that i have some expectations for you.

take time out to read my emails
act on them and ask questions
and most importantly share with people you know who also (pain point)

If you are not willing to make that small commitment then please accept the (freebie) but know you are missing out on the support that comes with access to (fancy newsletter name).

if you are serious about (over coming pain point) then your declaration is:

i will read the emails
i will ask questions
i will act on information
i will help others

Eric.

Its had a profound impact on open rates and engagement. Its been tailored more but thought I would share it and hopefully inspire someone.

What's your thoughts

  • I like that email, Eric.

Almost all welcome emails are boring, mundane blah blah blah bloody blah blah nonsense.

My welcome email is bit more brash, but the idea is the same. To jolt people into paying attention and to get rid of time wasters.

If your welcome email is not memorable... well... you know the rest.

    Cheers,

You'll have to post, love to see something a bit more brash.

I know Dan Kennedy does some of these but his emails tend to put my back up.

That said I am a big believer in the concept that marketing should repel as well as attract

      Your Download Is Waiting

      Body:
This is the part where I'm supposed to thank you for signing up
      to my email list.

I'm not going to do that.

You've prob'ly decided to run for the hills with your free mind
      map anyway.

If that's your intention, will you please unsubscribe before you
      start running?

      However...

If you decide to stay, you should remember these 6 things...

      1) You will get a valuable email from me every day (If you don't
want daily emails, then stop signing up to people's email
      lists)

      2) I don't want, or need your approval. I don't want, or need
validation. If you have an opinion, or want to criticize... don't
bother contacting me... I don't care.

      Listen to this...
Note: I removed this link for this demonstration

      3) If you email me with a question, I'll happily answer it. I'm
here to help, but if you persistently contact me looking for free
advice without any intention of investing in my paid products, I
WILL delete you from my list

      4) You won't catch me promoting "product launch" products (I'm
not a bum bandit for the gurus. I can't stand most of them)

      5) If I promote something to you, I'll show you proof that I use
it myself. If I don't use it, or haven't bought it, or don't
believe it can help you, I won't promote it (I'm not an affiliate
      whore)

      6) I will NOT show you how to earn $17.564.76 in a months
time. If you fall for that nonsense, you're not someone I ever
      want to work with.

So why should you stay on my list?

Dunno, prob'ly because I don't care whether you do or not.

If you see why that's important, that's a better reason
      than any.

Best to make an educated decision after a couple of emails, eh?

      Anyway...

      Here's your download...

Use it. Edit it. Put your name on it. Give it away. Sell it. Whatever.

      See you tomorrow.

      Wear something nice.

Your follow-up approach is a great idea, but be careful with the following part:

"I think it's only fair to warn you that I have some expectations for you."

More sensitive types may want you to speak to them more like an alley and not sound like a parent. Minor tweeks in tone can be helpful sometimes.
