Do plain text emails convert better or worst than HTML emails?

I've seen lots of Internet marketers send plain text emails selling products, services and events however most companies send HTML emails that are well designed.

Which ones convert better and what other things are there to think about when creating email campaigns?

  • I send both in a multi part email. That way there is something for everyone.
  • Seems like basic plain text emails get slightly better delivery rates for me, but HTML emails always get more clicks so it really depends what you are looking for.
  • I'm going to go with less is more. Simplicity is key!

HTML - you're delivery rate will drop. Unfortunately - you don't have the credibility of a huge company or organization. Though - I do know a few people who utilize some HTML - but it's VERY light.

Plain text is the way to go. Just think about it this way - it's not what you - it's how you say it. You don't need big flashy pictures, colors and images to get a point across and to get your subscriber to click. If your copy is good enough - they're going to click through no matter what it looks like and email servers are a lot more likely to accept a plain text email than a fully loaded HTML.
  • I think for auto responder mostly plain text will do and for newsletter you can use html layout. But you still need to be careful of the formatting of plain text especially with tracking and big links.
  • I only send html text. It works fine. Most of your email list members are using gmail
  • Plain Text is definitely the way to go if you are attempting to get higher CTR's. The most successful Marketers use plain text.

An interesting point though, depending on which Autoresponder you use, you might have to use an HTML/Plain text mix in order to include links in your emails.

I use GetResponse which is super simple to use in this way.
