Getresponse is refusing to import my buyers list

I launched a product last week, with a partner.

He just gave me the list of buyers (CSV file) and when I tried to import it to getresponse, they refused to on the grounds of list sharing and policy issues.

Is there a way around this problem? I'll be launching with my partner in the future, and I don't want to lose out on my list because these companies don't let me use my buyers!

I have multiple campaigns with them, but they've always been opt-in subscribers. This is the first time I'm trying to import contacts.

But a buyers list is a buyers list, and I'd like to start sending messages to them soon, when they still remember my product and me.

I'd appreciate any advice you guys can offer.

Thanks in advance!

If GetResponse won't accept it, it's extremely unlikely that another hosted autoresponder service with a reasonable delivery-rate, that you'd want to use long-term, will allow it.

Some kind of self-hosted autoresponder is going to be your solution, here, I think.

Be aware, though, that this carries some risks. I appreciate that a buyers' list is a buyers' list, but they need to be your subscribers (i.e. they need to recognise that the person from whom they receive emails is the person from whom they bought/to whose list they voluntarily subscribed) for the emails not to be "spam", don't they?

There are services that will allow you to do that. They're not services that people with long-term successful email marketing experience will recommend. (And those two facts are inextricably causally connected!).

One of the big issues in email marketing is the importance of starting off where you're going to stay for the long-term, because of all the "list-importing problems". Don't panic, though: this issue is resolvable with self-hosted autoresponders (on which I'm not the right person to offer advice, because I don't use them). And good luck!

PS Can you really not persuade GetResponse to test a small proportion of your list themselves, before rejecting it? That's a service they normally provide and they're about the only autoresponder company that will? Why hasn't that happened, here?

      Hi Alexa,

Thanks a lot for your advice!

You're right. I want the long term solution, and reputable companies like Getresponse and Aweber are what will offer me that.

This time though, it was unavoidable since my partner released the product in JVZoo and hence, he received the list.

For the next launch though, I'm planning on having my list integrated with my membership site so my partner can get the list from JVZoo and I can from membership registrations. This time, I missed out. It was a good lesson for the future though.

My buyers do know who I am, since I created the product. Some of the are in contact with me via Email to discuss their questions. I also talk with some of my OTO buyers on our private Facebook group. In fact, a buyer raised a very important question yesterday, and I wanted all my buyers to know the solution.

That's why I was going to import the list, so I can address this issue, and also start building a relationship with them. We just finished delivering the done for you websites, so it was a good time to send them more tips too.

I'm not sure why they didn't offer to test out the list though. I did mail them and explain that they were my buyers, and they knew who I was, but I received a generic response saying they can't accept my list because of the reasons they stated in their previous email (list sharing and policy issues).

They did recommend a list verification service (Britverify) to clean my list, but the thing is, my partner had the same problem with Getresponse. He had a buyers list that was created in August I believe, and they refused to import it. He verified it with a service they recommended. He said they had a ton of hidden charges and almost wiped out his PayPal account. But Getresponse did accept his list after the list cleaning.

And, it looks like they gave me their affiliate link to the service. It's blatantly obvious, which doesn't sit well with me either. Do you think they're doing this so they can make a commission? I know they're a reputed service, but still.

I don't want to succumb to that every time though, which is why I created this thread.

But next time though, I'm going to make sure that I always get people to opt-in, one way or another! No more uploading CSV files.

        This is what you do:

If at all possible cut that .csv file into multiple files of 100 emails or less. GR likes smaller chunks of email for import. In any case, 500 emails for a single import is often the max they accept before rejecting the whole list.

Why won't they accept all the emails (they should be cleaned emails, btw) in one big batch, I'm not so sure. It's my suspicion that they use software that lags for larger .csv files, so your import is automatically unsuccessful because it will just clog up their system (keep in mind they're being very nice accepting imports like that anyway).

I have many friends who use this small chunk method of importing to get their leads from aweber into GR. So if you can cut up that list, there's still plenty of hope for you.
