Trouble Linking to Amazon Product

I have what seems like a question in which has a simple answer but I'm not having lucky. I signed up as an Amazon affiliate and I am attempting to link to a specific book in one of my follow up emails, but am not quite sure how I am supposed to go about doing this.
The link I was given was html code to embed in a web page. Can I simply enter a referral link to the product in my email or does Amazon not allow this? If anyone who has any experience as an Amazon affiliate can help out, I'd greatly appreciate it.
