Can emails be detected when added to another list?

Hi there

Recently an ex-colleague of mine was purchasing subscribers from a solo ad provider.

He wanted to duplicate his list i.e. copy it to another bulk email service, and when he asked his provider for advice, he says its against the TOS. He's only allowed to have these subscribers on 1 account, 1 list.

Long story short, he "threatened" him that he would find out if he did that because every list he helps build for people have some kind of bot or tracker that will notify him if someone tries to do things like that.

My question is... is he full of bull? or is there a tracker/bot that can do this ? The only way i can think of this happening is if he only subscribes to your list and doesn't subscribe anywhere else and suddenly starts receiving a 2nd email from somewhere else.

  • Sounds a bit like crap, the only thing he might have is a few of his own emails that he uses to track situations like this

    • Yeah, he probably is subscribed only to that 1 list and making sure he gets emails ONLY from him ..thanks for the feedback
  • He has added several email addresses that show up in his Inbox that tells him who is using the list and what list is being used.

It is very easy for people who sell lists to track who is using the list.

I hope this has been helpful,

  • If your friend will buy from this guy again, he may not want to do this. If it was a one-time buy, I do not see any problem with copying it to another service.

The only way he can do this is to have seed accounts as others said. Many list providers do this to get an idea on how and where their list are being used.

TowerData has a service that will tell you when their servers first saw any email address. If their server has never seen the email address, it will tell you. Depending on how much data you have, you could run it against this list and be 99.9% sure that the seed emails have never been seen and remove those from the list. :-)

I have tested this feature myself using my seed accounts and it works well.
  • Honestly I don't there there's a good way to know if the email has been added to another autoresponder manually unless they started spamming using a different name.

But if you keep it clean and just added the emails to another account for backup purposes that would be fine. Just make sure you're not adding on the same company as they have logs.
  • I've never used solo ads. Is it normal for a solo provider to try and dictate use of subscribers after they are purchased. Sounds crazy to me.
  • Maybe that helps: If you rent (physical) addresses here in Germany you always have up to 1 or 2 % (depending on the broker) "control addresses" in there to make sure you only use the addresses once. I suppose you can easily find people who report to you if you pay a little...
