no first name on my landing page on WP

hi

just a quick question, do i HAVE to get a persons FIRST NAME on my landing page? only because i am using the free landing page designer using the SumoMe plugin on Wordpress and to include extra fields i.e a first name.. i would need to pay $10/month for it.

to keep use of the FREE method, how can i go about obtaining the persons FIRST NAME once a person opts-in? i was thinking of maybe doing a questionaire as the first auto-responder after the welcome email.

i seriously think that $10/month to include a extra field or two or three is not worth it at all BUT i think its the only landing page that allows it to "pop up" after a certain number of seconds when someone comes onto my blog site on Wordpress

your opinions and advice would be of great help to me as i'm still a beginner

many thanks!

No you don't need a first name

You'll find some people put garbage in there, so you send emails saying

    "Hi Numbnuts"

There are times when i could really use a first name .. if i am emailing the offer of a free 15 minute consult to my VIP list etc.. but apart from that it's not too important

It is not necessary to get email database by names. But It will be a bonus if you manage to get the names of your prospects along with their email addresses.

Contact Form 7 does this for free. Also if you are using a mail company like aWeber, Mailchimp or Constant Contact, they all have form builders. You can build the form there and stick it in a text widget. You'll have to learn a little css to make it look exactly the way you want on your page. Main issue is usually adjusting width, margins and padding.

    Don't sweat it.

I do not go for the Name at all. It is a waste of time in MMO Niche and there is NO conclusive evidence that it will earn you more money in the long run or build a more solid relationship with your your Sub

Take yourself away for double opt-in form. It will decrease your visitor subscription

It would be nice to be able to send personalized emails, it's always nicer to address someone by their real name, instead of something generic, but it's not necessary. Mr. Thompson gave a really good example as to why! LOL!!

      Hi Sajali316,

It seriously depends on your niche..

If your niche is IM/MMO, people are sooooooo used to seeing capture page asking for names, because they know you're just going to personalize anyway...

Yeah so you don't want to be saying, "Hi there, f***ers!"

In any case, one thing that I do want to share is about tracking and split testing. You should be pitting several different versions of your popup squeeze against each other, and see which converts best.

You can actually go here: IM Impact Live Website Clinic - Learn How to Create a Better Site! and read the article about how you can create the most effective squeeze form on your blog!

      Hope that helps!

I would say if you do need their first name, never ask for it at the first time.

Just put an email form and let them be on your list first. You can always ask for their first name via your follow-up emails
