First you need to figure out which niche you would like to work in. Then go ahead and buy a domain name and host a web site with opt in page to collect email address in return for a free gift. Set up an auto responder and promote affiliate products to your list. After you've set everything up, your main focus should be on bringing targeted traffic to your website. You can join forum on your niche and participate with the link to your signature pointing to your website. Forum traffic is highly targeted. First of all I know how you feel, I remember being completely overwhelmed by different points of view. When I started I wasnt part of this great community. You are in the right place.

Right this is how I would start again............
(This is assuming your going to be in the IM market and you have chosen a niche already.)

1. First of all you need an autoresponder, I would recommend either Aweber or Getresponse. Start with a free 30 day trial.

2. Research what pain points and issues people are facing online - here on the WF.

3. Write 7 reports and 7 emails that solve those problems.

4. Use your reports to entice people onto your list. BUT I would use the 7 reports at once. Release one report per day over a 7 day period. This way you are building a relationship with your new subsciber and adding value at the same time.

5. Set up your signature on WF and Digital point. Get involved with discussions and add value where ever you can.

6. Set up a YouTube channel and record 7 videos based on the subjects of your 7 reports.

You now have a steady trickle of FREE traffic. Costs so far zero.

To start you can use your autoresponders hosting services for your first squeexe page.

On day 5-7 you want to either create your own product or find a good quality affiliate product. Then start to promote the product to your list. Even if you only have ten subscrobers. Because you have taken the time to develop the relationship your subscribers will trust you more.

When you start to make money reinvest into paid traffic strategies. Put together a Twitter and FB campaign.

Build you list faster. But dont forget about the free traffic methods they are good quality and steady.

Focus in one Niche, Let say for example that you choose Internet Marketing like garethjehu1said, you need bassically a Simple Squeeze page that convert your traffic into leads (Subscribers) for do this.

1: You need a Domain Name (.com cost $9.99 anual)
2: You need a Hosting Account (GVO cost $9.97 every month, plus they give you a free autoresponder)
3: You need a Squeeze page (They are a lot of free and paid Software that can help you create a beautiful squeeze page) Remember to create a report like garethjehu1said or you can get free plr products that you can giveaway for free to build your list
4: Learn tactics to get traffic via Facebook, Google, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. (You can paid for ads or get also free traffic)
5: This is more advance tactics (Create a Blog) by having a website or blog, this can help you get a presence online and brand you business, plus if you create good content, you can get free traffic via the search engines.

My recomendation is that don't start buying program and program and lost all you money, without first taking action in one training courses.

Since you are interested in building your own list, you have to be aware that it really requires practice. As a newbie, you would have to start from the fundamentals like having knowledge and skills on creating websites/blogs and publishing content in different formats such as pdf's and videos.

If you can do these, you can now start with building your list.

1. Choose your niche and focus on it. Example: Weight loss
2. Create your hook. Create a helpful report about weight loss and publish it as a pdf file.
Your hook should be something that is irresistible for your prospects.
Example:


3. Create a dedicated page called a squeeze page for your prospects to submit their email in exchange for the free report. You would need an autoresponder for your email marketing campaign. I recommend aweber.com. It is very easy to use. Drive targeted traffic to your squeeze page through facebook, twitter and the other social networks. You may have to join weight loss forums too and include a signature leading to your squeeze page. (it is what I am doing in my sig)

4. Keep educating your list about losing weight for the first week.
5. Sell your main offer (your product/affiliate product) that will help them solve their weight problem.
6. Cross-sell other related products.
7. Scale up

People who are doing really well online have their own list.

I would never recommend you build a list with solo ads. These same people are on 10-30 other lists already.

Look at other sources of traffic to get new leads.

You have to be patience while making money from affilitate programs as in some cases they mail fail. Solo ads or buying Adwords is also one tough point to gain profits.
Don't buyEbooks, but read here in forums as you will get a lot of information for free with help.

I wouldn't go spending money quite yet, I suggest you to immerse yourself in as much free information as possible.

Google or YouTube better yet tips on affiliate marketing (or whatever type of marketing it is you're looking to get into), download free eBooks and find the consistencies. There is TONS of Free information out there and if you buy a digital product that's only one person's point of view and they're going to drop affiliate links everywhere (as you should by the way), so you want to get as much as an unbiased point of view as possible.

A great blog to visit with some AWESOME, FREE ways to MMO is Videofruit.

If you want some awkward and fun ways to make money, check out Noah Kagan's blog OkDork. Funny dude, with some really cool ways to make money with Eventbrite and there's case studies to boot.

my first suggestion to you is stick with one thing. just because you didn't get the results you wanted doesn't mean you failed. it means you were learning and you gave up before you learned enough. be patient and stop jumping around. you wont get anywhere doing that.

i agree. with your friend. building a list is important but how you maintain that list is just as important if not more important because if you can't maintain a list, building a list is a waste of time and effort

The main thing is figuring out what niche you want to be in and then see if you can find a niche within that niche.

List building can be easy, but the hard part is figuring out how to make money once you have a list.

You can spend money on solo ads, ppc, and all the other traffic generation methods but if you can't convert that traffic into sales then you are wasting your money.

I've built a list to over 2000 people, but didn't make back a portion of the money I spent on building that list. I did get sales here and there, but lacked some things with really getting the ball rolling.

When building your list work on figuring out how you can build a relationship with that list and truly, GENUINELY find ways to solve their problems and assess their needs.

If I may, I'd like to suggest you find a mentor --- someone to tell you what to do, and show you how to do it which is something I wish I had done when I started, instead of wasting so much time and spending more than I could afford, looking for a way to make money online.

One of the first things my mentor suggested was to join Warrior Forum, and he was right! There are, as you've found, lots of experts here who very generously share their knowledge and expertise.
