Check there TOS before signing up or contact them. See if they allow the industry you're in. Some of them they won't allow:

Multi-level marketing (MLM)
Affiliate marketing


If you would like a self hosted solution, you'll need a third party SMTP. here are some software you can install on your server.

Again if you used a third party SMTP. check their TOS.
If you're using your own SMTP make sure it's properly configured for better Inbox Placement Rate.

All you really need is an autoresponder. Either a service or self hosted. Since you are new, I would recommend a autoresponder service.

Try some plugin from Wordpress. Using Wordpress with built-in plugin for auto-response will save your money as well!

I agree with the self hosted Wordpress plugin. Not hard and saves money! Lots of it!

The problem with all the traditional email marketing software is that they were built to sent emails and were not too focused on having tools that can enhance capturing leads.

Most of the email marketing software still just gives you the web form embed option that can be embedded on just a single page or into sidebar.

You need something which can slide in or popup on the web page of your website and dang you will have 10x more subscribers instead of normal web form embeds.

You need a good autoresponder which will accumulate all your emails.

If you are good in CSS then you can play with the basic forms and create good looking optin forms on your blog... but if you are not good in CSS then you can go for optin form creation plugins like Thrive leads, Optin Skin etc.

You can integrate very professional forms on your blog very easily.

Some good suggestions by @responsly, if you even use self hosted solution with application like Interspire Email Marketer, you can still be able to setup autoresponders.

I am using shelf hosted on Wordpress, if I get big enough and my delivery becomes an issue I will consider switching to a big company.
