Is a great list of subscribers a great list of subscribers?

Hi,

I've just joined this forum and am really just begining my journey in online marketing.

I've got a retail business in a niche area (High end bikes parts acc etc) and we are going to begin some online retail. We will initially try some testing by email and then move onto a fully functioning e-commerce set up.

I've got a list of email subscribers that my business partner and I have been building carefully over the last few years. All of the people on the list are or have been interested in what we do and would be qualified customers.

Our total current numbers are just over 12,000 subscribers. Is this a good number to begin with?

Needless to say we're nervous about pushing the send button on the first email so are giving deep thought on how this first mail is worded and ensuring that there's something in the mail for our customers. Any advice on this? Should we test on a sample of our mailing list first?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and great forum,
Mark

The size of your list is unimportant!
What matters is the quality of your list.

There is a big difference between a buyers list and
    a freebie seeker list.

A buyers list of 2,000 can make you 6 figures a year easy
If you build trust a value prior to selling to them.

A list of 10k or higher freebie seekers that you just pound
With affiliate links in no were near as valuable.

So ask your self how do you acquire your list and
What kind of relationship do you have with them.

So you have been building this list for several years and have never sent a email to them?

If that's the case I see a problem you need to be aware of. Peoples memories are short. Here is what may happen the first time you email them.

The people that where added to the list over a month or two ago are going to say.... Who the heck is this? Must be spam. Let's click the spam button on this one.

I no longer ride a bike so this does not pertain to me anymore. So it's now considered spam by me.

Lot's of the email accounts may no longer be used and bounce. Some may have been converted to soft spam traps.

When building a list. ALWAYS email them from day one on a regular basis so they don't forget who you are. You don't have to promote to them from day one but you do need to keep them remembering you.

With a list that old that has never been mailed to I would probably import it into a different autoresponder and send an email that needs to be confirmed if they want to stay on your list.

Not sure why you waited so long. You may have a very stagnant List. But of course you will not know until you go ahead and try. And don't be nervous

Maybe you can send out an email about the Trends in bikes and bike parts and what is hot and what is not, what is the most effective type of part to use etc..etc...

Weave and tell a Story that these Bikers can relate to. Make it funny and captivating.

You do not need to have any promos that first or second email.

    Just helpful and engaging material.

As you go on you can start adding passive P.S. promo links that could help them further.
