what is opt-in, double opt-in? I am new to email marketing

A big thanks to all of you . I have learned a lot from reading everyday comments
I have a query though.
As per me Email marketing is something where you put up a catchy line bring the user on your page. Give a freebie as in Sign-in to receive the free pdf

What is opt-in? Double opt-in
Can anyone please explain it in brief?

    Hey, opt-in is where a visitor enters their email address into your squeeze page/capture page/opt-in page in order to receive their freebie, hence opting in.

    Double opt-in is a 2 step process before being added to your email list. They opt-in on your page, then thy receive a confirmation email which they must open and click the confirmation link to confirm that they opted in. Single opt-in is where they simple opt-in and are added straight to your email list.

    Double opt-in results in less subscribers usually as a percentage won't bother confirming that they opted in BUT they generally will be more responsive to you and your emails as they have completed two steps to receive information from you etc.

      It's personally up to you whatever opt-in method that you choose.

      I have tried both and I mainly use SOI (Single Opt-in) but if you are more comfortable with having the subscriber take that extra step to ensure they really want to be on your list then I would recommend you use double opt-in.
