basic explanation of list building please

so, just out of curiosity:
you have site with that you attract people there with some clever line like 'learn to make $100s of dollars a day with this awesome product' or whatever, then they give you their email address and you send them their ebook or whatever, and now they are on your list.
so then you take your list and keep sending out spam emails for different junk that they were never looking for, or what?

im just trying to understand
regular email lists for real businesses i understand, an actual newsletter goes out with news and maybe some special sale info.

    You were on track from the beginning but you don't want to send out spam. If you're giving away "How to make $100s of dollars a day" you should actually be earning $100 per day, first of all.

    What you send is completely up to you, and yes, some people treat their lists like crap and send out tons of promotions but you can provide value to your list and be different. Replicate your favorite newsletter by offering information and tips and tricks that help people do whatever they opted in for.

    If you want to make money with email marketing then you have to send out promotions, but sending out spam is not the way to make it online.

      so if they sign up for product A, you ship them product A, then your list should be thrown away, unless you plan to ship them stuff they didnt sign up for, which is anything other than product A, right? emails trying to sell anything other than product A is spam, yes?
      then theres no to keep a list in the first place.
