Email Deliverability Issues using our automated email

One of the websites I manage requires sending out email updates to anywhere from 10 to 100 people on a daily basis by email. These are automated emails that our system generates for the subscribers. Some of these may have a pdf attachment but I've been told that on some email providers like yahoo, hotmail our emails will not come through at all. Is there any way to find out if the website is blacklisted or another method to ensure they people get their emails?

I would use a 3rd party SMTP then you will almost always deliver. I mass mail and inbox at 97% while Getresponse and Aweber are stuck at 70-80% even with an opted in list.

Thanks for the info Brewmeister. Do you know of any good providers?

I found that Amazon has Amazon SES which allows me to send emails at $0.10 per thousand. Is that a good rate?
Would these still be from @mydomainname.com or would be something like @amazonsdomainname.com ?

You can send email using Amazon SES from your own domain, however it may show in some email clients, like Gmail, something like "Your Name via amazonses.com" for autoresponder types of messages.

To check the reputation of your domain use senderscore.org to get a idea, but remember if you are on a shared IP then you'll have others that could be hurting or improving your reputation.

for say 100 emails per day, you are fine with your webhost's sendmail unless your server IP does not have a good reputation, and delivery in inbox is a big question.

I wouldn't rely on my webhost's server IP especially if it's a shared plan. I would attach a 3rd party SMTP to it always. Unless you are using gmail, aol, yahoo, etc SMTP to send emails. Which works with TEAR as well. They do have limits, I believe google is 500 emails daily, but I would keep it at 300 daily and spin emails.

As previously mentioned stick to a 3rd Party Autoresponder that is in GOOD standings with ISPs. Try Aweber.
